Daegu Education & Parent Center Opens: Supporting Parental Growth Beyond Just Child Education

The Daegu Metropolitan City Office of Education is shifting the focus of parent education from merely providing information on child education to fostering the personal growth and capacity building of parents themselves.

On the 10th, the Office of Education held an opening ceremony for the "Daegu Education & Parent Center," established on the former site of Jukjeon Middle School in Dalseo-gu, and announced the launch of this educational hub designed to provide comprehensive support for both parental growth and child education.

The key significance of the center's opening lies in the introduction of a new parent education framework. The Office of Education has developed the "Daegu Parent Competency Curriculum"—the first of its kind in the nation to systematically outline the competencies required by parents—and plans to implement it with the center at its core.

The new curriculum does not limit the parental role to simply supporting a child's academics or career path. Based on the perspective that parents must also continue to grow, it establishes three core competencies: "Parental Growth," "Child Growth," and "School Cooperation."

Building on this foundation, the curriculum outlines eight major competencies and sixteen sub-competencies, covering areas such as self-understanding, communication and relationship building, health support, academic support, career support, social growth support, understanding educational changes, and participation and cooperation within the educational community.

The curriculum development process incorporated feedback not only from parents but also from students and teachers. A total of 9,346 individuals—comprising 2,623 parents, 5,211 students, and 1,512 teachers—participated in a survey conducted by the Office of Education in 2024. This input ensured that the educational content reflects the roles expected of parents at various stages of their children's growth and within the school environment.

Educational support tailored to different life stages will also be strengthened. The center has produced 61 types of educational PPT materials tailored to children's developmental stages—from early childhood through high school—and established an "At-a-Glance Life-Cycle Daegu Parent Education Resource Map" that aggregates over 350 pieces of online content, including short-form videos, card news, and special lectures. These materials are scheduled for distribution to schools and households by February 2027.

The newly opened center is designed as a multi-purpose educational space where parents can learn, receive counseling, and relax.

Facilities include "Mind Forest" (a meditation room for inner stability and recovery), individual and group counseling rooms, a video training room, small and large discussion/training rooms, an open lecture hall with a book-café atmosphere, and a large lecture hall accommodating 200 people. Outdoor amenities feature a barefoot walking meditation path and a mindfulness forest.

Programs utilizing these unique spaces will also be offered. Initiatives such as "Parent Growth Classes" (covering self-regulation and mental coaching), mindfulness-based stress reduction programs, and "Happiness Classes for Dads" aim to support parents' psychological and emotional recovery while fostering family communication.

The center will serve not only as a space exclusively for parents but also as an open educational hub for the local education community. Starting this October, lecture halls and training spaces will be made available to the City Office of Education, district education offices, schools, teacher research groups, and parent support groups to facilitate exchange and cooperation among educational stakeholders.

Kang Eun-hee, Superintendent of the Daegu Metropolitan City Office of Education, stated, "Parent education must shift away from merely delivering information on child-rearing and evolve into competency-based education that fosters the parents' own growth." She added, "I hope the Daegu Parent Education Center establishes itself as a hub for the educational community—a place where parents, schools, and the local community can learn and communicate together."
