Yeongcheon Horse Racing Park Becomes Reality After 17-Year Wait: ‘Let’s Run Park Yeongcheon’ Opens on the 11th
"Let’s Run Park Yeongcheon," a project pursued by Yeongcheon City, North Gyeongsang Province, for 17 years, is finally ready to welcome citizens and visitors.
Yeongcheon City announced that the park will begin official operations on the 11th, with an opening ceremony scheduled for the 13th. The ceremony will be attended by officials from the government, the National Assembly, North Gyeongsang Province, Yeongcheon City, and the Korea Racing Authority, as well as local residents.
Selected as the site for the nation's fourth horse racing park in 2009, the project moved forward through various stages, with Phase 1 construction beginning in 2022. This opening marks the launch of the country's fourth horse racing park—following those in Seoul, Jeju, and Busan-Gyeongnam—and the first of its kind in North Gyeongsang Province.
The Phase 1 project involved developing horse racing facilities alongside public leisure spaces on a site spanning approximately 660,000 square meters across Geumho-eup and Cheongtong-myeon. Facilities include a grandstand (one underground and four above-ground floors) capable of accommodating up to 5,000 spectators, a racetrack, stables, racehorse management facilities, and an animal hospital.
A waterfront park, walking trails, and picnic areas have been created within the inner track. Consequently, the venue is expected to serve as a multi-purpose leisure space where citizens and tourists can enjoy relaxation and recreation not only on race days but also during ordinary times.
On the 13th, the opening ceremony will feature a commemorative performance, followed by celebratory shows from the Arirang Taemu Demonstration Team and the ROK Army 3rd Military Academy Military Band. A "Let’s Run Park Yeongcheon Opening Commemorative Special Race" will also be held that day to mark the official opening.
Opening celebration events tailored for families have also been prepared. On the 12th–13th and 19th–20th, the park plans to showcase its new role as a tourism and leisure destination by offering children's play facilities, hands-on programs, local food, and cultural performances.
Yeongcheon City anticipates that Let’s Run Park Yeongcheon will play a significant role in revitalizing the local economy.
An influx of racegoers and tourists is expected to boost local spending—benefiting restaurants, accommodations, and retail—and increase tax revenue, including leisure taxes. The park is also expected to positively impact the growth of related industries, such as horse breeding, rearing, and training.
According to Yeongcheon City, the direct and indirect economic ripple effects from the second phase of construction and 30 years of future operations are estimated at approximately 1.8 trillion won, with the creation of about 7,500 jobs.
Transportation infrastructure is also improving. Following the opening of the Seoyeongcheon Hi-Pass Interchange last April, the extension of the Daegu Metro Line 1 to Geumho, Yeongcheon, is currently underway; these developments are expected to significantly enhance accessibility for visitors from outside the area, including the Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions.
Yeongcheon City plans to utilize the remaining land for a second-phase project to expand leisure and recreational facilities for residents and strengthen tourism and cultural functions. The city also aims to attract the headquarters of the Korea Racing Authority in conjunction with the government's second phase of public institution relocation, envisioning Let’s Run Park Yeongcheon as a central hub for the domestic horse industry.
Yeongcheon Mayor Kim Byeong-sam stated, "I extend my gratitude to the citizens, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, the Korea Racing Authority, and all other stakeholders who have worked together over the past 17 years to bring about the opening of Let’s Run Park Yeongcheon." He added, "We will ensure it becomes a local landmark where citizens can comfortably visit and enjoy themselves, while also serving as a growth hub that injects new vitality into the local economy."
He continued, “The official opening marks a new starting point,” adding, “We will seamlessly carry out the second phase of the project, the extension of the urban railway, and the relocation of the Korea Racing Authority headquarters to develop Let’s Run Park Yeongcheon into a premier regional hub that integrates the horse industry with cultural tourism.”
