Yecheon County Mayor Visits Ministry of the Interior and Safety to Request Special Grant Tax and Support for Redesignation as a Population-Declining Area

Yecheon County Mayor Ahn Byeong-yun has taken steps to secure state funding and seek redesignation as a "population-declining area" to address key local issues.

On the 10th, Mayor Ahn visited the Ministry of the Interior and Safety (MOIS), where he met with officials from departments handling grant taxes, disaster management, and balanced regional development. He explained the county's financial situation and major pending issues, requesting government-level support.

At the Grant Tax Division, he outlined local financial conditions and proposed special grant tax support for projects such as the installation of a rotating pedestrian bridge over Hancheon Stream, improvements to residential living environments, and the renovation of aging infrastructure.

During his visit to the Disaster Management Policy Division, he emphasized the necessity of replacing the Hancheon Bridge and carrying out maintenance projects for flood damage response. He also requested government support for initiatives aimed at proactive disaster response, such as expanding natural disaster warning systems.

The issue of redesignation as a population-declining area was also a key agenda item. Mayor Ahn asked the Balanced Regional Development System Division to fully consider Yecheon County’s population and financial conditions, as well as the risk of regional extinction, during the upcoming evaluation for redesignation scheduled for October.

Yecheon County anticipates that redesignation as a population-declining area will enable the stable continuation of relevant government support programs and facilitate policies to address population decline, such as improving living conditions and expanding the "living population" (visitors and commuters who contribute to the local economy).

This is not Mayor Ahn’s first visit to the ministry; he previously visited on July 14 to meet with the Director General of the Natural Disaster Response Bureau and the heads of the Grant Tax Division and Balanced Regional Development System Division, personally explaining the county's key issues, including securing state funds and seeking redesignation as a population-declining area.

County Governor Ahn Byeong-yun stated, "Securing support from the central government is paramount to resolving the region's pressing issues," adding, "I will personally visit relevant authorities to explain our needs and will follow through until the necessary projects and policies are reflected in government plans and budgets."
