Daegu Cyber University Highlights Korea-Japan Welfare and Academic Solidarity at the Kagawa Toyohiko Society Conference in Japan

Daegu Cyber University participated in the Kagawa Toyohiko Society conference held in Japan, reflecting on the university's founding spirit and the historical significance of welfare and academic exchanges between Korea and Japan.

Lee Geun-yong, President of Daegu Cyber University, attended the "38th Kagawa Toyohiko Society Conference" on the 4th at the Honjo Kagawa Memorial Hall in Sumida Ward, Tokyo. Choi Eun-young, Vice President of Daegu University, also attended as a society member, engaging in academic exchanges with researchers from both countries.

Co-hosted by the Kagawa Toyohiko Society and the Institute for Christian Studies at Meiji Gakuin University, the conference brought together researchers from major Japanese universities to share various research findings centered on Kagawa Toyohiko’s social activism and welfare philosophy.

The Honjo area, where the conference took place, holds deep ties to Kagawa Toyohiko’s social activities. Following the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923, he centered his relief efforts for the impoverished and disaster victims in this area; his practical social activism earned him the title of "Saint" in Japanese society. He was also twice nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Prior to the conference, participants toured sites such as the Honjo Kagawa Memorial Hall, Nakanogo Credit Union, Hikarinoen Nursery School, and Higashi-Komagata Church. The tour offered an opportunity to observe how Kagawa Toyohiko’s philosophy of "serving from the lowest position"—meaning serving one's neighbors from a place of humility—was put into practice in the field.

During the subsequent conference, Professor Kentaro Itami of Hosei University delivered a keynote lecture titled "What the Honjo Experience Meant for Kagawa Toyohiko: Towards Building a Society of Solidarity." Researchers from Japanese universities—including Doshisha University, Kwansei Gakuin University, Chiba University, and Ehime University—also delivered presentations.

Notably, Choi Eun-young, Vice President of Daegu University, gave a special presentation titled "Toyohiko Kagawa and Seongsan Lee Young-sik: Transnational Heritage and Future Vision," outlining the lineage of welfare and educational philosophies that have linked the two nations.

Vice President Choi explained the ideological succession—tracing the path from the connection between Daegu University founder Rev. Seongsan Lee Young-sik and Toyohiko Kagawa to the university's first president, Dr. Changpa Lee Tae-young, and current president Lee Keun-yong. Based on this history, she emphasized the need to further develop the shared values of welfare and education into a legacy for future generations.

The connection between Rev. Lee Young-sik and Toyohiko Kagawa dates back to the period of Japanese colonial rule, when Rev. Lee was studying in Japan. Having twice endured imprisonment for his independence activism, Rev. Lee met Kagawa while studying at Kobe Theological Seminary; he was deeply influenced by Kagawa’s philosophy of "practical welfare"—a commitment to taking direct action for the impoverished and the socially vulnerable.

After returning to Korea, Rev. Lee Young-sik did not settle for a conventional life as a pastor; instead, he dedicated himself to education and welfare initiatives for the disabled and marginalized. His efforts included caring for Hansen’s disease patients at the Daegu Aerakwon center and establishing the Daegu School for the Blind and Deaf. This spirit was subsequently carried on by the university's first president, Dr. Lee Tae-young.

Dr. Lee Tae-young had a personal connection with Toyohiko Kagawa during his childhood; the educational and philosophical influence he received from Kagawa served as a crucial foundation for the later development of special education and the shaping of the university's founding philosophy.

Daegu Cyber University is currently focusing on translating these historical connections into contemporary values in education and welfare. President Lee Geun-yong explained that Toyohiko Kagawa’s philosophy of social welfare and the university’s founding spirit are linked by the shared value of "universal welfare"—a concept that places human dignity at its core.

"Toyohiko Kagawa’s philosophy of 'serving the marginalized' and our university’s founding principles converge on the spirit of universal welfare, which seeks to restore the dignity of the underprivileged," President Lee said. "We are committed to further developing the legacy left by our predecessors in a way that aligns with modern values in special education and social welfare."

On the 5th, the delegation also visited the Toyohiko Kagawa Memorial Matsuzawa Archives in Setagaya Ward, Tokyo. During a meeting with officials there, they discussed ways to expand personnel and academic exchanges between the academic society and Daegu University.

By participating in this conference, Daegu Cyber University plans to re-examine the historical significance of the Korea-Japan welfare and education exchanges—bridged by figures such as Toyohiko Kagawa and Reverend Seongsan Lee Young-sik—and to expand this foundation into future collaborative efforts in the fields of special education and social welfare.
