Sunlin University’s Secondary Battery Convergence Department Wins Grand Prize and Eco-Brain Award at Global ESG Competition

Students from the Department of Secondary Battery Convergence at Sunlin University won both the Grand Prize and the Eco-Brain Award at a global competition by showcasing creative ESG ideas utilizing battery technology.

Sunlin University (Acting President Jeon Gyeong-guk) announced that two student teams from the Department of Secondary Battery Convergence participated in the "4th Global ESG Idea Competition Using Battery Technology," held at KINTEX in Ilsan from the 9th to the 11th, and secured the Grand Prize and the Eco-Brain Award, respectively.

Hosted by the Korea Battery Technology Association, the competition was organized to discover ideas that leverage battery technology to address safety, resource circulation, and environmental and social issues, thereby fostering a sustainable industrial ecosystem.

The Grand Prize-winning "PKH" team consisted of students Han Seung-wan, Park Kang-hyun, and Kim Geon-hee. They proposed a "Smart Automatic Flood Barrier System," showcasing flood prevention technology capable of rapid response during disasters such as torrential rains and flooding.

The PKH team’s idea focused on preventing damage to buildings and loss of life through a system that automatically detects flooding and activates flood barriers. Their project was highly acclaimed for applying battery and ESS (Energy Storage System) technologies to safety in everyday life to solve social problems.

The Eco-Brain Award went to the "Eco-Guard" team, comprising students Lee Hyun-jae, Jeong Yun-seo, and Kim Seong-hun. The Eco-Guard team presented a novel way to utilize used batteries through a "Smart Load Warning System for Temporary Structures Based on Waste Batteries."

This system was designed to utilize waste batteries while simultaneously monitoring the load status of temporary structures in real-time and providing advance warnings of potential hazards. The project was highly acclaimed for combining two objectives: promoting resource circulation through the reuse of spent batteries and enhancing safety management in industrial settings.

Park Kang-hyun of Team PKH remarked, "I believe the positive reception stemmed from our application of an ESS (Energy Storage System) to flood barriers designed to protect lives and buildings during extreme rainfall emergencies."

Professor Ok Chang-woo of Sunlin University’s Department of Secondary Battery Convergence stated, "It is significant that the students developed practical solutions by applying the secondary battery technology acquired during their studies to other industries and social issues." He added, "We will continue to support various educational programs to help them grow into professionals equipped with the practical skills and creative problem-solving abilities demanded by the industry."

Meanwhile, Sunlin University’s ANCHOR Project Group is driving initiatives linked to local industries, supporting the cultivation of skilled local professionals and the development of innovative technologies. In particular, through the "K-U City Talent Cultivation and Innovative Technology Development" project, the group is dedicated to fostering talent tailored to local industry needs and enhancing technological competitiveness.
