Scenes from alleyways once casually overlooked, shops that have vanished, weathered signs, and the scents and sounds that fill the neighborhood—all come together in one place. An archiving exhibition, where citizens collect memories of the city and imagine its future together, is set to take place in Buk-gu, Daegu.

The Happy Buk-gu Cultural Foundation will host a special archiving exhibition titled "Fantasy City Expo" at the Cheongmundang center from October 1 to October 24.

This exhibition features the participation of HOOLA, an urban culture research and planning group, alongside female artists working in video, graphic design, installation art, and painting. Together, they present memories and records captured from various locations across Daegu. The exhibits include maps, photographs, oral histories, drawings, videos, and installations collected from neighborhoods such as Bukseong-ro, Sangyeok 3-dong, Chilseong-dong, Daemyeong-dong, Jisan 1-dong, and Hwawon. The exhibition offers a fresh perspective on the city—viewing it not merely as a static space, but as a "stratum" where layers of time have accumulated.

The exhibition unfolds across the first, second, and third floors of Cheongmundang, with each level dedicated to a distinct theme.

On the first floor, "City Collection Point: Where Do You Stand Now?" introduces HOOLA’s urban archiving methodology and provides visitors with a "City Collection Card." Through questions such as "What has disappeared from your neighborhood?" citizens are encouraged to recall their own personal memories of the city.

The second floor, "Urban Strata: Beneath the City’s Surface," conveys traces of memory left in various locations through photographs, maps, oral histories, drawings, and videos.

The third floor, "City Memory Phenomenon Lab: The City After the Record," serves as an interactive space for visitor participation. Using self-created "city collection cards," participants mark sensory memories—such as specific scents, sounds, vanished shops, and old signs—on a map and collectively envision the future of the city.

A distinctive feature of this exhibition is that it goes beyond mere documentation and preservation; it reinterprets past materials as "artifacts of the future." It encourages citizens to reflect on what should be preserved from things that are disappearing and what new elements should be created.

Related programs are also scheduled. An event titled "Reading the City Within the Exhibition" will take place alongside the opening at 4:00 PM on October 1. Additionally, a "City Collection Gathering" will be held at 2:00 PM on October 8, where participants will walk through the alleys and residential areas near Cheonmundang to personally collect photos, sounds, notes, and drawings.

Lee Geun-soo, Chairman of the Happy Buk-gu Cultural Foundation, stated, "This exhibition offers an opportunity to rediscover urban landscapes and memories we might have overlooked and to imagine the future of our city together with its citizens."

Admission is free, and everyone is welcome to participate. The exhibition is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM and is closed on Sundays, Mondays, and public holidays. Registration for the "City Collection Gathering" opens on September 18 via the Happy Buk-gu Cultural Foundation website.
