How has the Korean language—spread globally via the Korean Wave and the internet—been received in the English-speaking world, and how have its meanings evolved? A scholarly book analyzing these trends has recently been published.

Co-authored by Professor Lee Jeong-bok of the School of Cultural Contents at Daegu University and a team of domestic and international researchers, *Noona, Tteokbokki, Daebak! — Korean Words Spotlighted by the Oxford English Dictionary* (published by Sina-sa) sheds light on how Korean vocabulary entering the English-speaking world not only takes root but also undergoes changes in meaning and function at the hands of local users.

The project involved a team of researchers, including Professor Lee Jeong-bok, Professor Kim Sun-hyo of Chinese Culture University in Taiwan, and researchers Choi Yun-ji (Seoul National University) and Lee Ui-jong (Inha University).

The research team compared Korean and English dictionaries and analyzed instances of Korean vocabulary usage by English speakers on social media. By comparing definitions from the *Standard Korean Language Dictionary* and the *Oxford English Dictionary* (OED), they examined the semantic shifts and adaptations Korean words have undergone in the English-speaking world.

The book is organized into two parts comprising eight chapters. Part 1 analyzes 46 Korean-related words added to the OED since the 2000s, categorizing them into four themes: the Korean Wave, food culture, terms of address, and general culture. It takes a detailed look at how words rooted in Korean daily life and culture—such as *noona* (older sister/female friend), *tteokbokki* (spicy rice cakes), and *daebak* (huge success/awesome)—are used in English-speaking regions.

Part 2 delves deeper into the international spread of the Korean language, covering topics such as the process of listing Korean terms of address in dictionaries, the proliferation of martial arts and traditional terminology, and the translation of address terms in contemporary fiction. The book’s most significant feature is that it goes beyond merely listing Korean words included in the OED; it offers an in-depth exploration of the evolving cultural contexts and consumption patterns that accompany the spread of the Korean language into the English-speaking world.

Professor Lee Jeong-bok explained, "This book does not stop at simply confirming the global expansion of the Korean language; it also illustrates how the language evolves in tandem with a society's cultural consumption habits."

The research team hopes that this book will serve as an opportunity for general readers—as well as foreign learners of Korean and researchers—to discover new value in the Korean language and culture.
