【브레이크뉴스 구미】김영수 기자=구미시가 15일 삼성SDS 구미 AI 데이터센터 착공을 맞아 지역 기업과 동반 성장을 논의하는 간담회를 열었다.

이날 구미시청에서 열린 간담회에는 구미시 관계자를 비롯해 삼성SDS 배한욱 데이터센터혁신팀장, 시공사인 삼성물산 김도형 국내건축본부장 등이 참석했다. 시공을 맡은 삼성물산은 공사를 제때 마무리하겠다고 약속하며, 지역 우수 건설업체의 참여를 크게 늘리겠다고 밝히면서 구미 건설 경기에 훈풍이 불 것으로 보인다.

이번에 착공한 AI 데이터센터는 60MW 규모로 지어진다. 지난 1월 경상북도·구미시와 삼성SDS가 맺은 투자협약의 결과물이다. 관련 인허가 절차를 모두 마치고 본격적인 첫삽을 떴다.

특히 이번 공사는 삼성의 대규모 구미 미래산업 투자계획이 실행되는 첫 출발점이라는 점에서 의미가 크다. 삼성전자와 삼성SDS는 지난 7월 구미를 첨단 미래 제조단지로 키우기 위해 19조 원을 투자하겠다고 발표했다. 이에 따라 앞으로 구미에는 휴머노이드 로봇 양산체계와 AI 기반 공장 등 핵심 인프라가 차례로 들어설 예정이다.

김장호 구미시장은 "이번 데이터센터 착공을 시작으로 구미가 AI와 로봇이 결합한 미래 제조혁신의 중심지로 도약할 것"이라며 기대감을 나타냈다. 

이어 "대규모 기업 투자가 지역경제에 실질적인 도움이 되려면 시민이 체감할 수 있는 상생의 성과로 이어져야 한다"며 사업 추진 과정에서 지역 기업의 참여를 최대한 확대해 달라고 당부했다.

Construction Begins on Samsung SDS Gumi AI Data Center—A Boost for Local Construction Firms

On the 15th, Gumi City held a meeting to discuss mutual growth with local businesses, marking the commencement of construction on the Samsung SDS Gumi AI Data Center.

Attendees at the meeting, held at Gumi City Hall, included city officials, Bae Han-wook (Head of the Data Center Innovation Team at Samsung SDS), and Kim Do-hyung (Head of the Domestic Construction Division at Samsung C&T, the project's contractor). Samsung C&T pledged to complete the project on schedule and announced plans to significantly increase the participation of high-quality local construction firms, signaling a welcome boost for the local construction industry.

The AI ​​data center currently under construction will have a capacity of 60MW. It is the result of an investment agreement signed last January between Samsung SDS, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, and Gumi City. Following the completion of all necessary licensing and approval procedures, the project has officially broken ground.

This project is particularly significant as it marks the starting point for the implementation of Samsung's large-scale investment plan for Gumi's future industries. Last July, Samsung Electronics and Samsung SDS announced a 19-trillion-won investment to transform Gumi into a hub for advanced future manufacturing. Consequently, key infrastructure—such as mass-production systems for humanoid robots and AI-driven factories—is slated to be established in Gumi.

Gumi Mayor Kim Jang-ho expressed his optimism, stating, "With the groundbreaking of this data center, Gumi will leap forward as a center for future manufacturing innovation that integrates AI and robotics."

He added, "For large-scale corporate investment to provide tangible benefits to the local economy, it must translate into mutually beneficial outcomes that citizens can truly feel," and urged the parties involved to maximize the participation of local companies throughout the project's execution.
