KHNP Strengthens Foundations for Sustainable Energy and Safety—From ESG Management to Nuclear Plant Protection
Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) is boosting its competitiveness in the energy and safety sectors by expanding sustainable management practices while simultaneously strengthening protection capabilities for its nuclear power plants.
KHNP announced that it won the Grand Prize in the ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) category at the "2026 National Contribution Awards" on the 15th and subsequently signed a business agreement with the Air Force Missile Defense Command to counter aerial and missile threats against nuclear power plants.
KHNP received the ESG Grand Prize for the third consecutive year at the awards ceremony held at the Seoul Garden Hotel. Key factors in the evaluation included its efforts toward a sustainable energy transition, such as expanding carbon-free power sources and fostering an eco-friendly energy ecosystem.
Building on the stable operation of its nuclear power plants, KHNP is diversifying its energy portfolio by expanding into carbon-free energy businesses, including clean hydrogen and renewable energy. Last year, the company achieved stable operational results with a nuclear capacity factor of 84.6% and secured an investment foundation for enhancing safety and developing next-generation reactors by issuing Asia’s first nuclear green bond.
The company is also expanding its demonstration infrastructure for clean hydrogen projects. Following the completion of Korea’s first and largest 2.5MW-class hydrogen production facility in Buan, North Jeolla Province, KHNP has finalized the design for a 10MW-scale demonstration plant for nuclear-based clean hydrogen production. This year, the company is launching the demonstration project in earnest, proceeding sequentially with infrastructure development and the installation of core equipment.
Beyond ensuring the safety of nuclear power plants, KHNP has also stepped up efforts to strengthen protection systems for critical national infrastructure. On this day, KHNP signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Air Force Missile Defense Command at its headquarters to strengthen capabilities for responding to and defending against aerial and missile threats to nuclear power plants.
The agreement aims to enhance response capabilities against aerial threats—such as ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)—and to reinforce the cooperative framework between the nuclear plant operator and the military.
Under the agreement, the two organizations will conduct tabletop exercises and joint drills simulating aerial and missile threat scenarios, and maintain a system for rapid information dissemination and mutual cooperation during crises. They plan to boost practical response capabilities through continuous exchanges and training by combining the military's expertise in air defense and missile response with KHNP’s experience in nuclear power plant operations.
At the signing ceremony, KHNP also presented a donation of 20 million won to support the service members carrying out missions for national security.
KHNP President Kim Hoe-cheon stated, "Winning the National Contribution Award for three consecutive years is the result of our steady efforts toward sustainable management." He added, "We will continue to pursue ESG management to meet the public's expectations and trust, while ensuring a stable power supply and driving a sustainable energy transition."
He further remarked, "By expanding cooperation with relevant agencies, we will contribute to the safe operation of nuclear power plants—ensuring public peace of mind—and to the strengthening of national security."
