The Daegu and Gyeongbuk Committees for the Era of Local Decentralization gathered to share information on the government's balanced national growth policy and current issues regarding the administrative integration of Daegu and Gyeongbuk, as well as to discuss future directions for cooperation.

On the 16th, the Daegu Metropolitan City Committee and the Gyeongsangbuk-do Committee for the Era of Local Decentralization held a joint workshop at the Hilton Gyeongju Hotel.

The event was organized to enhance policy understanding among committee members from both regions and to facilitate an exchange of views on local issues. In particular, the workshop focused on examining the administrative integration case pursued by Jeonnam and Gwangju, sharing the key issues and challenges that arose during that process.

Approximately 50 people attended the event, including Lee Byung-hun, Acting Chairperson of the Presidential Committee for the Era of Local Decentralization; Ha Se-heon, Chairperson of the Daegu Metropolitan City Committee; Ha Hye-soo, Chairperson of the Gyeongsangbuk-do Committee; as well as committee members and relevant officials from both the city and the province.

In the keynote address, Acting Chairperson Lee Byung-hun explained the government's direction for balanced regional development and future tasks under the theme, "The '5-Pole, 3-Special Zone' Balanced National Growth Strategy of the Government Based on Popular Sovereignty."

Following this, Moon Tae-kyung, Head of the Local Government Policy Division at Gyeongsangbuk-do, presented the current status of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk administrative integration initiative. Min Hyun-jung, Head of the Future Strategy Research Division at the Gwangju Institute, then explained the process and key issues of the prior case under the theme, "Significance and Challenges of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Administrative Integration and the Launch of an Integrated Special City."

After the presentations, a comprehensive discussion involving committee members from both regions took place. Participants exchanged views on matters requiring review during the Daegu-Gyeongbuk administrative integration process, future tasks for cooperation, and ways to foster inter-regional linkages. The two committees agreed to use this workshop as an opportunity to strengthen their cooperative framework for continuously sharing information on pending policy issues related to the "Era of Local Autonomy" and discussing key regional agendas.

Ha Se-heon, Chairperson of the Daegu Metropolitan City Committee for the Era of Local Autonomy, stated, "This was an occasion for Daegu and Gyeongbuk to jointly examine regional issues and discuss future directions in alignment with the government's balanced growth policy, which focuses on 'five major hubs and three special zones.'"

Oh Jun-hyeok, Head of the Planning and Coordination Office at Daegu Metropolitan City, remarked, "There are many challenges to address—such as administrative integration and the creation of a regional economic zone—in order to boost regional competitiveness." He added, "We will cooperate with Gyeongbuk Province to ensure that Daegu and Gyeongbuk can expand their roles within the national economy."

Ha Hye-soo, Chairperson of the Gyeongsangbuk-do Committee for the Era of Local Autonomy, noted, "It was a meaningful session where committee members from both regions exchanged views on administrative integration, one of the key pending issues for Daegu and Gyeongbuk."

Lee Sang-su, Director-General of the Local Government Strategy Bureau at Gyeongsangbuk-do, said, "We will continue to foster communication and cooperation between the Daegu and Gyeongbuk committees for the Era of Local Autonomy and work together to find solutions for the issues facing both regions."
