"Shh! The vibrations in the ground and the sound in the water disappear!"

POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology, President Moo-Hwan Kim) is attracting attention by designing a meta-surface that can control acoustic waves or seismic waves that can be used to avoid earthquakes or to build submarines that cannot be tracked with a sonar detector.

According to POSTECH, Professor Jun-Seok Noh of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Chemical Engineering, and Lee Dong-woo of the Integrated Course in the Department of Mechanical Engineering designed a metamaterial that can control not only the light but also the sound domain, and by adjusting the acoustic refractive index in the water to absorb or pass waves, a sonic detector It proposed a'underwater stealth meta-surface' that could not be caught.

In addition, it was confirmed that the wave flow in the plate, such as vibration, can be changed to an extreme. In particular, we proposed a methodology that can actually implement the cloaking phenomenon in which the singularity, which is an infinite refractive index, was considered impossible to be realized.

The results of this research were published in the authoritative journals in the field of applied physics, “Journal of Applied Physics” and “Physical Review Applied,” respectively.

When light encounters a substance in nature, it generally refracts in the positive (+) direction. Metamaterials can design such a refractive property of light in a negative (-) direction, a zero refractive index (0), or a complete absorber that causes complete transmission. Because of this, when it meets metamaterials, it looks transparent.

The refractive index can control not only light but also sound, and the research team theoretically confirmed a meta-surface that can be remarkably absorbed without reflecting sound waves by controlling the refractive index of sound. Through an array of split-orifice-conduit hybrid resonators, a thin meta-surface was designed to absorb sound waves in a broadband range (14 kHz to 17 kHz). The meta-surface designed in this way can achieve a'underwater stealth function' that is not detected by a sonic detection system that detects objects using the resonance of sound waves.

Meanwhile, the research team confirmed that it is possible to pass or change the direction of elastic waves such as seismic waves, depending on how the meta-surface is designed. Using Albert Einstein's “general theory of relativity,” the idea that the path of light changes in the warpage of space-time due to the change of the gravitational field due to mass, a platform capable of controlling extreme elastic waves on a curved plate was proposed.

As an example, a refractive index singularity lens, that is, a meta-surface lens that converges to almost zero thickness, is implemented to implement an elastic wave Eaton lens that can be bent at 90 degrees and 180 degrees in a wide frequency band (15 kHz to 18 kHz) in a thin curved plate. did.

In addition, by proposing a methodology that can actually implement the cloaking phenomenon in which the singularity exists in theory, it is expected that phenomena such as black holes, an extreme celestial body, can be used as a test bed in seismic waves in the future. Based on this understanding of the singularity of the refractive index, it is expected to be able to protect nuclear power plants or buildings from earthquakes by using them to extremely control the energy waves generated when the plates of the continent collide or split.

Prof. Joon-Seok Noh, who is attracting the world's attention with metamaterial research, said, "The metamaterial research has been focused on light and electromagnetic waves, but we have confirmed that it can be applied to sound waves and seismic waves." It is expected that it can be used to make a submarine that can be avoided and a nuclear power plant that is intact even in the event of an earthquake.”

This research was conducted with the support of the Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power K-CLOUD project, the Korea Research Foundation's global frontier project, the mid-sized research project, and the RLRC Regional Innovation Leading Research Center' Global Doctoral Training Project.
