Professor Seongwon Lee's research team in the Department of New Materials Science at DGIST (President Yang Kook) announced on the 19th that they have succeeded in developing an energy storage device that is thin, flexible and has excellent mechanical stability using single-layer graphene and metal oxide heterojunction material.

Professor Seong-Won Lee's research team said, "Telemedicine is in the spotlight and a lot of attention is being paid to the development of wearable devices and sensors." However, if it is bent enough to deform the shape of the supercapacitor, it is difficult to secure physical stability, so there is a limit to its practical use.”

He added, “As an alternative, inexpensive film-type energy storage devices are being actively studied.

Accordingly, Professor Seongwon Lee's team at DGIST manufactured a supercapacitor in the form of an ultra-thin film of less than 0.1mm, and secured mechanical flexibility to the extent that it can be used even when folded.

In particular, the developed supercapacitor has the advantage of guaranteeing the same electrical characteristics as when it is unfolded even when folded, so that even if it is attached to the skin as an energy element of a wearable product, it is possible to supply stable energy without changing characteristics in free movement.

The supercapacitor developed through this research is manufactured by growing and bonding metal oxides on single-layer graphene, and has great significance as a representative case of using single-layer graphene, which has not been widely used in industrial fields.

Not only this, but also has a meaning as a guideline for future research fields by observing the complex changes that occur when metal oxides are joined with other materials.

Professor Seongwon Lee of the Department of New Materials Science at DGIST said, “The supercapacitor completed through this research has a total thickness of 30 μm (micrometer) and a storage capacity of 7.76 mF/cm2 per unit area, ensuring almost the same storage capacity even after 1000 charging and discharging. "It is a supercapacitor with many advantages, but we plan to continue our research to solve the total energy storage capacity somewhat lower than other commercial batteries at present," he said.
