(재)문화엑스포(이사장 이철우 경북도지사)는 경주엑스포공원 ‘화랑 숲’에 억새풀 군락이 절정을 이뤄 관광객의 큰 호응을 얻고 있다고 29일 밝혔다.

 

억새는 벼과에 속하는 초본식물로 햇빛이 잘 드는 풀밭에서 무리를 이루고 자라는 여러 해 살이 풀로 가을에 만개한다.

 

경주엑스포공원 억새풀 군락은 22,500㎡(축구장 3개 크기)가량의 드넓은 규모로 ‘화랑 숲’ 내에 자리한 맨발 전용 둘레길인 ‘비움 명상 길’ 끝자락에 위치해 공원을 은빛으로 물들이고 있다.

 

빼곡하게 자란 억새가 바람에 일렁이는 모습은 보문단지가 한눈에 내려다보이는 주변 전경과 함께 가을의 경주를 담을 수 있는 명소로 새롭게 자리매김하고 있다.

 

특히 코로나19로 답답함을 호소하고 있는 지역민과 관광객들에게 탁 트인 넓은 공간과 가을 정취를 가득 담은 모습으로 힐링을 선사한다.

억새풀 사이에서 여유를 즐기며 걷는 관광객과 한 폭의 그림처럼 어우러진 억새와 도심의 모습을 담아가기 위한 관광객들의 카메라 셔터 소리는 끊이지 않고 있다.

 

가족들과 함께 방문한 김경애(60 ․ 경주시 외동읍)씨는 “가을을 좋아해서 억새를 보기위해 무장산 억새군락에 종종 갔었다”며 “울창하고 아름다운 억새도 보고 맨발걷기도 하고, 전시도 함께 볼 수 있는 경주엑스포공원에 오는 것이 효율적인 가을여행인 것 같다”고 말했다.

 

관광객 이유경(39 ․ 포항시)씨는 “코로나19로 집에만 있어서 답답해하는 아이들에게 가을을 느낄 수 있게 해주고 싶어 방문했다”며 “억새풀 사이로 뛰어다니는 아이들을 보니 저절로 힐링이 되는 기분이다”고 전했다.

 

억새풀 군락은 지난해 처음 모습을 공개했다. 경주엑스포공원 내 유휴부지로 남아있던 ‘화랑 숲’을 ‘2019 경주세계문화엑스포’ 개최에 맞춰 맨발 전용 둘레길인 ‘비움 명상 길’로 개발해 관광객을 맞고 있다.

 

최근 맨발 걷기가 건강관리 방법으로 인기를 얻으면서 관광객의 발길이 늘어 억새풀밭도 함께 주가를 올리고 있다.

 

‘비움 명상 길’은 야간에는 전국 최초의 야간 체험형 산책코스인 ‘신라를 담은 별(루미나 나이트 워크)’로 꾸며져 LED조명과 홀로그램이 꾸미는 화려함과 억새풀 등 자연이 조화된 이색적인 모습을 연출하고 있다.

 

류희림 경주엑스포 사무총장은 “가을을 대표하는 관광 콘텐츠 가운데 하나인 억새풀 군락이 경주엑스포공원 ‘화랑 숲’ 내에 다른 어느 곳보다 울창하고 아름답게 피어있다”며 “가을철 경주를 찾은 관광객들에게 다양한 볼거리를 제공할 수 있도록 노력하겠다”고 말했다.

 

경주엑스포공원은 오전 10시부터 오후 6시까지 운영한다. 경주타워 4방향 전면 유리에 적용된 스크린을 통해 8세기 신라로의 시간여행을 즐길 수 있는 ‘신라천년, 미래천년’과 신라 금관과 첨성대 등 문화재를 인터랙티브 미디어 아트로 꾸민 ‘찬란한 빛의 신라(타임리스 미디어 아트)’, 경주를 대표하는 핫 플레이스로 자리한 ‘솔거미술관’ 등 차별화된 문화콘텐츠로 365일 관람객을 맞고 있다.

 

로봇팔과 3D홀로그램이 접목된 액션 퍼포먼스 ‘인피니티 플라잉’은 주말 오후 2시30분 공연이 펼쳐지고 비수도권 지역에서는 유일한 상설 뮤지컬 ‘월명’도 화요일에서 토요일까지 저녁 7시에 진행된다.
