지난 한 해 동안 포항제철소 임직원들은 부서별 장학회를 통해 100여명이 넘는 학생에게 1억원에 달하는 장학금을 전달했다. 포항제철소 임직원들은 부서별로 자체 장학회를 조성해 가정 형편이 어려운 학생들에게 학비, 생활비 등을 전달하고 있다.

장학회 종류도 부서별로 각양각색이다. STS 제강부는 한부모 가정 학생들을 대상으로 매월 생활비를 일정 금액 지원하고, 화성부는 다문화 가정 아동을 중심으로 장학금을 전달하고 있다. 제선부에는 무려 10개의 장학회가 운영되고 있다. 지난해 제선부 장학회 10곳은 총 1,800만원을 자매마을인 해도동 중,고등학생에게 전달했다.

포항제철소의 역사만큼 부서별 장학회 또한 깊은 역사를 자랑한다. 1981년 결성된 환경자원그룹 한마음 장학회는 올해로 결성 40주년을 맞는다. 한마음장학회는 가정형편이 어려운 고등학생을 선정해, 고등학교 입학부터 졸업까지 3년간 연 120만원씩 지원하고 있다. 제선부 한울 장학회와 STS압연부 한마음회는 1989년 결성돼 30년간 활동을 이어오고 있다.

장학회의 수 만큼, 포항제철소에는 남몰래 학생들을 돕는 '키다리 아저씨'들을 향한 감사 편지가 속속들이 도착하고 있다.

지난달에는 STS압연부 소둔산세공장 장학회 한마음회에서 3년간 장학 지원을 받아 올 해 대학 진학을 앞둔 한 학생의 어머니가 감사편지를 보냈다. 어머니는 편지를 통해 "넉넉지 않은 형편에 아들이 잘 성장하도록 긴 시간 후원해주셔서 감사하다"며 "어른이 되어 받은 사랑을 사회에 돌려주어야 한다고 가르치고 있다"고 감사 인사를 전했다. 기존 수혜학생이 고등학교를 졸업함에 따라 한마음회는 올해 새로운 장학생을 선발해 지원할 예정이다.

장학회 활동을 하고 있는 포항제철소 임직원은 "지역사회와 함께 살아가는 포항제철소의 일원으로서 지역 학생들은 나의 가족이나 다름없다고 생각한다"며 "학생들이 마음껏 꿈을 펼칠 수 있는 환경을 조성하기 위해 장학 활동을 더욱 확대해 나가고 싶다"고 전했다.

Founded in 1981, the Hanmaeum Scholarship of Environmental Resources Group celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. The Hanmaeum Scholarship Association selects high school students who have difficulty with family circumstances and provides 1.2 million won per year for three years from high school entrance to graduation. The Hanul Scholarship Association of the Chosun Department and the Hanmaeum Society of the STS Rolling Department were formed in 1989 and have been active for 30 years.

As many as the number of scholarships, thank-you letters are arriving at the Pohang Works to help the students secretly.

Last month, the mother of a student who was about to go to college this year sent a letter of thanks after receiving scholarship support for three years at the STS Rolling Department Sodunsanse Factory Scholarship Association. She said her mother thanked her through her letter, saying, "I am grateful for supporting my son for a long time so that my son grows up well in a limited situation," and "I am teaching that I have to return the love I received as an adult to society." As existing beneficiary students graduate from high school, Hanmaeum Society plans to select and apply for new scholarship students this year.

An executive at Pohang Works, who is active in the scholarship, said, "As a member of the Pohang Works that lives with the local community, I think that local students are like my family." I want to expand it," he said.
