이강덕 포항시장은 21일 북구 기계시장 5일장을 현장을 방문해 서민경제와 민생 동향을 살피고 상인들과 적극 소통하는 시간을 가졌다고 밝혔다.

이날 이강덕 시장의 기계시장 방문은 코로나19로 장기화에 힘들어 하는 상인들을 격려하며, 장바구니 물가를 살피고, 시설현대화 사업 추진에 따른 전통시장 활성화 방안을 논의하는 등 현장의 생생한 목소리를 듣기 위해 이뤄졌다.

포항시는 기계목월시장 장옥 개축 공사를 위해 올해부터 2023년까지 3년간 총 사업비 50억 원을 투입해 기존 노후 장옥 개축과 각종 부대시설 정비 등 현대화 시설을 조성할 예정이다. 현재 사업비 10억 원을 확보해 4월 기본 및 실시설계 후 오는 10월 공사 착공 및 2023년 완공 예정이다.

시설 현대화 사업을 통해 기계 5일장은 편리한 장보기 환경과 안전하고 깨끗한 공간으로 탈바꿈해, 관광객이 즐겨 찾는 지역 명소이자 기계면민의 소비 갈증 해소 창구의 역할을 할 것으로 기대된다.
