영천시장학회(이사장 최기문)가 지난 2002년 설립 이래 영천에서 공부하고 성장해 지역의 명예를 높이고 나아가 국가에 이바지 할 수 있는 우수한 인재를 양성하기 위해 지금껏 쉼 없이 달려온 가운데 장학기금 300억 조성이 눈앞에 두고 있다.

29일, 영천시에 따르면 그 간 4,000명이 넘는 학생들에게 70억 원 가까운 장학금을 지급하고 영천인재양성원을 통해 양질의 교육을 제공하여 스스로 공부하고자 하는 학생들에게 현명한 선택이 가능하도록 적극 지원하고 있다.

올해 장학금 지급 내역을 보면, 성적우수장학 등 총 5개 분야 11개 사업에 대해 280여명의 학생들에게 2억5천여만 원을 지급하였고 연말까지 340여명에게 총 3억4천여만 원을 지원할 예정이다.

분야별 세부사항으로, 학업성적이 우수한 학생들에게 지급하는 성적우수장학, 전국 또는 국제단위의 예술, 체육, 기능, 기타 분야 대회에서 입상한 학생들에게 지급하는 글로벌특기적성장학, 저소득 가정 등 경제적 여건이 어려운 학생과 다자녀세대 학생들에게 지급하는 복지나눔장학, 관내 교사들의 연구비를 지원해 주는 교육지원장학 및 관내 대학생들에게 생활비를 지원하는 관내대학지원장학 등이 있다.

코로나19로 보류중인 해외연수사업 등은 올해도 추진하기 어려운 상황이지만 다자녀세대에 대해 자녀수별로 장학지원을 확대하고 올 3월에 대한민국 최초의 로봇특성화 대학인 한국폴리텍대학 로봇캠퍼스가 영천에 개교함에 따라 관내 출신 학생들에 대한 생활비 지원을 위해 지급 항목을 추가하여 지원했다.

현재까지 장학기금 조성액은 298억여 원으로 300억 원 목표 달성이 임박해 있다. 특히 올해 1분기 장학금 기탁액이 3억 원을 넘어 민선 7기 들어 같은 기간 최고치를 기록했고, 관내 기탁뿐만 아니라 영천에 특별한 연고가 없는 외지 업체에서도 영천교육발전을 위한 장학금 기탁이 이어지고 있어 장학기금 300억 원 조성이 더욱 탄력을 받고 있다.
