Yeongcheon City, finally selected for smart specialized infrastructure construction project

On the 6th, Yeongcheon City (Mayor Ki-moon Choi) was finally selected as the “Low-Power Intelligent IoT Logistics Component Commercialization Foundation Project”, a smart specialized infrastructure project in 2022 promoted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and secured 6 billion won in national expenditure.

With this selection, Yeongcheon City invested a total project cost of 18.6 billion won (government funds 60, local expenses 119, private investment 7) for three years from 2022 to 2024 to establish industry-academia-research councils such as Gyeongbuk Hybrid Components Research Institute, Gumi Electronics and Information Technology Institute, and Daegu University. Promote the business centered on it.

Low-power intelligent IoT logistics parts refer to parts that convert energy wasted in life into electric energy using harvesting technology and supply the converted energy to non-power independent self-charging logistics parts (sensors).

In other words, this is a wireless charging platform that does not require an external power source by collecting and charging energy required to drive the device from all energy sources in the surrounding environment.

Logistics parts with a non-power independent self-charging system, the core of this business, are applied to the logistics field of local auto parts manufacturers to collect data, and the data collected there is sent back to the parts center's environmental information collection and transmission module. The system can be used in various ways in the logistics field.

Until now, Yeongcheon City has cooperated with Gyeongsangbuk-do and Daegu University to develop energy harvesting technology. From March 2020, Yeongcheon City and Gyeongbuk Province jointly established the'Basic Plan for the Creation of the Energy Harvesting Industry Ecosystem', and established the'Energy Harvesting Technology Classification System' for the first time in Korea through expert working group meetings and various technology seminars. It has suggested systematic research and development and industrial development directions.

The project selected this time was also finally selected at this competition by proposing a plan for the application of IoT technology and logistics by utilizing core energy harvesting technologies derived through this process.

Separately, Yeongcheon City also verified various technological possibilities through a pilot project for developing a platform related to thermoelectric, vibration, and piezoelectric power for the demonstration of energy harvesting technology for companies in the city. In addition, local industry-linked specialty chemistry and innovation support projects are being implemented at Daegu University along with Gyeongbuk Province to develop related technologies and foster talent.

The final selection is that energy harvesting technology is making a lot of progress in the field of eco-friendly energy technology in advanced countries such as Europe, the United States, and Japan, but in Korea, it is still in the early stage of research and development as it is concentrated on the production of new and renewable energy such as electric vehicles, hydrogen vehicles, solar power, and wind power. As there is no industrial base, it can be said that this project reflects the strong will of the Yeongcheon market that Yeongcheon, Gyeongsangbuk-do will preoccupy in this field that will supply power for IoT components that will be the core of the hyper-connected era in the future.

Choi Ki-moon, Mayor of Yeongcheon, said, “We are having a difficult time with Corona 19 as new technologies developed by local innovation organizations through the research results related to the Internet of Things (IoT) developed and accumulated so far and through cooperation between industry, academia, and research institutes have been transplanted to local companies. We hope that this will give vitality to the logistics systems of many companies, including local auto parts companies.”
