POSTECH Noh Jun-seok's research team, nano-optical-based ultra-compact LiDAR technology

POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology, President Moo-Hwan Kim) Department of Mechanical Engineering and Chemical Engineering Professor Junseok Noh, Postdoctoral Researcher in Mechanical Engineering Dr. The lidar device and optical lidar technology developed through research were introduced as invitation papers to Nature Nanotechnology, the best academic journal in this field.

This research includes mid-level research by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the National Research Foundation of Korea, Global Frontier, RLRC Regional Leading Research Center, Future Materials Discovery, ERC Leading Research Center, Sejong Science Fellowship, and a Ph. It was carried out with the support of SL and LG Innotek.

In this study, core nano-optical technologies such as a phase-change material-based beam scanning technique, a flash-type lidar that does not require beam scanning using a point cloud generation device, and a light source-device integration technology and mass production technology, which the research team is carrying out, are also included in this research. I am introducing.

In particular, he explained that the ultra-precision lidar device developed by the research team can be extended not only to autonomous vehicles, but also to intelligent robots, drones, 3D panoramic cameras, CCTV, and augmented reality platforms.

LiDAR technology is a technology that measures the depth information of an object by irradiating a laser beam onto an object and measuring the time to return to it. In particular, LiDAR sensors are attracting attention in the field of future displays, from the machine industry such as autonomous vehicles, intelligent robots, and unmanned aerial vehicles, to recently mounted on iPhones and applied to complementary systems for 3D face recognition or payment.

Currently, the high-end mechanical lidar on the roof of an autonomous vehicle is about the volume of two adult fists stacked, and costs tens of millions of won. In addition, there are still many problems to be solved, such as a charging process that consumes a huge amount of power and a heat generation problem.

As an alternative to this, the research team proposed ultra-compact lidar technology based on nano-optical technology. Explain how nano-optical technology can innovate lidar sensor technology in various fields, from basic measurement principles of lidar to the latest ultra-high-speed and ultra-precise nano-optical measuring methods, and nano-optical devices such as metasurfaces, soliton bits, and optical waveguides. I'm doing it.

Prof. Joon-Seok Noh said, “The current research team is actually conducting several follow-up studies to develop a micro-compound lidar technology based on a metasurface device. If this research is successful, It is expected that the lidar device can be implemented inexpensively.”
