There are patients who visit the outpatient department or emergency room because of frequent nosebleeds and easy bruising. In the case of patients visiting the hospital like this, there are many cases where they are worried about whether it is blood cancer. Here's a summary of what you might be curious about about blood cancer.

First of all, it is important to understand the state of the body

Platelets are one of the components of blood that have a hemostatic function, so if the platelet level is lower than normal, frequent nosebleeds, difficulty stopping, or easily bruising may occur.

Although blood cancer is one of the causes that can cause your platelet count to fall below normal, the fact is that your platelet count can be lower or higher than normal for a variety of reasons.

Also, the symptoms of blood cancer are not just platelets falling. Blood consists of three types of cell components: white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets, and a liquid component called plasma.

Of these, white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets are produced in the bone marrow. The blood cell count changes depending on the condition of our body. For example, in pneumonia, the white blood cell count rises above normal to fight bacteria, and most of the red blood cell count drops, resulting in anemia.

Also, platelet counts are often normal, but may rise or fall. Therefore, even if there is an abnormality in the blood level, it is not unconditionally suspected of blood cancer, but it is important to understand the systemic condition. Strictly speaking, blood cancer is cancer in the bone marrow, the factory that makes blood.

Because there is a problem in the factory (bone marrow), the number, shape and function of the products (blood cells: white blood cells, red blood cells, platelets) are abnormal, which causes various symptoms to appear. If there is an abnormality in the white blood cells responsible for immunity, the immunity decreases and the person becomes vulnerable to various infections such as pneumonia, enteritis, cellulitis, and urinary tract infections.

When there is a shortage of red blood cells, anemia causes symptoms such as paleness, lack of energy, shortness of breath, and dizziness. In addition, when platelets are insufficient, nosebleeds and bruises easily occur, and in severe cases, serious bleeding such as cerebral hemorrhage, hemoptysis, and gastrointestinal bleeding may occur.

Leukemia is a disease that comes to mind easily when you think of blood cancer. Among leukemias, acute leukemia often shows the symptoms listed above severely. However, in the case of chronic leukemia, since the disease progresses slowly, the symptoms are often mild, and they are often discovered incidentally during medical examinations.

In addition, in the case of chronic leukemia, as the spleen in the stomach grows, it is often diagnosed while visiting a hospital and conducting an examination with symptoms such as discomfort under the left rib, palpable mass, or flatulence. Among blood cancers, multiple myeloma is a type of white blood cell that is cancerous in plasma cells that produce antibodies. This is a blood cancer that mainly occurs in the elderly, and multiple myeloma cancer cells produce a large amount of monoclonal antibodies, so the protein level in the blood test rises.

These monoclonal antibodies are useless and the patient's immunity is weakened. In addition, anemia worsens and monoclonal antibodies damage the kidneys, leading to renal failure and hypercalcemia. Because multiple myeloma weakens the bones, fractures in which the bones are broken, especially compression fractures of the spine, occur frequently, and even if it is not just a fracture, bone pain is felt.

Patients battling blood cancer, maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle is important

Once a blood cancer is suspected, a bone marrow test is performed, and many blood tests and radiological tests are performed. When performing a bone marrow test, various cancer genes and bone marrow chromosome tests are performed together, which is very helpful for an accurate diagnosis.

Treatment varies depending on the type of blood cancer, but basically, in the case of acute leukemia, patients are hospitalized and treated with anticancer drugs, and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is considered in the future. In the case of multiple myeloma or chronic lymphocytic leukemia, there are cases in which treatment is not started immediately and is monitored. If treatment is needed, chemotherapy is administered by combining injections or oral chemotherapy.

In the case of chronic myeloid leukemia, the majority of patients are treated with oral targeted chemotherapy. Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is largely divided into allogeneic transplantation and autologous transplantation, and it is frequently performed in acute leukemia, multiple myeloma, and lymphoma.

In the case of blood cancer, there is no special preventive method or it is difficult to detect early. However, patients who have previously received chemotherapy for other cancers or have received radiation therapy, especially radiation therapy to the pelvis, are at increased risk of developing blood cancer, so regular check-ups are recommended.

Finally, it is important for patients suffering from blood cancer to maintain a balanced healthy diet and lifestyle. It is important to maintain physical strength during chemotherapy for blood cancer, so it is better to eat foods that are easily digestible and absorbed rather than limiting or eating certain foods excessively.

However, during chemotherapy, there is a period of temporary weakening of immunity. In this case, it is better to eat mainly cooked foods. If you have any difficulties or questions during treatment, it is the safest and most reliable way to consult with your healthcare provider.

In particular, if you take various health supplements, you should consult with your doctor before taking it, as the interaction with the drug may decrease the efficacy or cause serious side effects. I pray for the cure of many blood cancer patients and the health of the reader.
