Smart Safety Square

Smart Safety Square

Pohang Works to prevent safety accidents with facial, voice, and object recognition AI technology

POSCO Pohang Works (Director Nam Su-hee) announced on the 21st that it had applied the facial, voice, and object recognition AI system to the electrical room to prevent accidental safety accidents.

The electrical room, where high-voltage electricity flows are gathered, is a space where there is an invisible risk of safety accidents. If you approach a live electrical panel without turning off the power or work on a panel with a different voltage by mistaken the operation panel, burns or electric shock may occur.

The Ministry of Energy at Pohang Works has developed an AI system 'Smart Safety Square' to minimize workers' mistakes and prevent safety accidents and applied it to the panel of the electrical room.

Smart Safety Square is a system that uses facial, voice, and object recognition to check whether a designated worker is wearing appropriate safety gear using artificial intelligence technology. In accordance with the safety rules, the panel is opened only when preliminary work preparation is completed to prevent safety accidents. It not only helps workers to accurately and meticulously execute and check the pre-safety measures themselves, but also blocks work progressing without safety measures in place.

The system uses facial recognition technology to determine whether the operator is authorized to enter the electrical room, and uses voice recognition technology to check whether the operator is performing cadastral verification to prevent the operator from confusing the work panel. After that, using object recognition technology, it is checked whether safety protective equipment such as flame-retardant clothing and flame-resistant gloves is being worn. The electric room panel door is opened only when all three requirements are met, and the operator's information, the work target panel, and the work time are automatically recorded and sent to the person in charge of the electric room by e-mail.

Lee Seung-hyeon, deputy director of the Ministry of Energy, who developed Smart Safety Square, explained, "As the panel door is set to be opened only for authorized workers, we expect that accidents due to misunderstanding of the work target will be significantly reduced."

In recognition of its innovative idea and safety accident blocking effect, the technology also won the Excellence Award at the Pohang Works Smart Safety Technology Contest held in July.

It is well-received among workers who use the actual system in the field.

Ryu Chang-yeol, an employee at the Ministry of Energy in charge of electrical maintenance, said, "If you repeatedly perform similar tasks, you may get used to the task and neglect safety measures such as wearing safety gear and checking intellectual property. told

Smart Safety Square is currently installed at the Pohang Works' converter gas charging station and is responsible for the safety of workers. Thanks to the favorable reviews from the field, POSCO is considering introducing the technology not only to the substations in the Pohang Works but also to the electrical facilities of the Gwangyang Works.
