Selected as one of the most representative '100 Korean clothes' by the Korea Hanbok Promotion Agency

Among the various costumes in our history from the Three Kingdoms period to the end of the Joseon Dynasty, representative ‘100 selections of our clothes’ were selected.

The Korea Hanbok Promotion Agency (Director Hyeong-Ho Lee) announced on the 12th that it has selected 100 of the most representative Korean clothes from historical relics such as murals from Goguryeo and Joseon Uigwe, as well as various costumes in literature, murals, paintings, and Uigwe.

Our clothes, which have shared our history and life, appear in various ways by era, function, and form, and in the changes and development, we can see the prototype and development of our clothes.

‘100 Our Clothes’ was promoted to reaffirm that hanbok is the identity and symbol of our nation and to promote the revitalization of the hanbok culture industry by combining it with new technology and developing it into hanbok cultural contents, while preserving the beauty and value of our clothes.

The Korea Hanbok Promotion Agency organized an advisory committee made up of related experts and held six advisory meetings to select the ‘100 Best Woori Clothes’.

As the basic work for the 100 selections, Keum Ki-suk (Professor Hongik University), Nam Kyung-mi (Member of the Special Committee on Cultural Heritage in Seoul), Ma Jeong-hoon (Busan Institute of Design Promotion), Yang-no Yoon (Professor Jungbu University), Lee Min-joo (Principal Researcher of the Central Research Institute of Korean Studies), Advisory members such as Eun-Joo Lee (Professor of Andong University), Mi-Suk Jeong (Curator of Gyeonggi Museum), and Eun-Soo Choi (Curator of National Folklore Museum) presented basic data from historical and academic perspectives, and prepared 100 selections through selection criteria.

In order to find out about the public's awareness and favorability of our 100 selections of clothing, we conducted a survey on public awareness of our 100 selections of clothing. From October 14 to 29, 2021, an online panel survey was conducted targeting a total of 1,047 adult males and females 19 years of age or older residing across the country.

As a result of the survey, the representative attire considered the most suitable was 'Goguryeo equestrian figure <Three Kingdoms Period> (90.5%)', 'Koryo Munshin Costume <Koryo Period> (90,8%)', 'Toecheongbok <Joseon Dynasty-Status' >(86%)'. In the future, the Korea Hanbok Promotion Agency plans to supplement and develop the '100 Best Our Clothes' through continuous research and collecting opinions.

The Korea Hanbok Promotion Agency plans to promote various contents such as production of ‘100 Our Clothes’, as well as a special exhibition of 100 of our clothes, production of story videos introducing our clothes, and Fashion-Chorus* containing 100 selections of clothes.

Lee Hyung-ho, president of the Korea Hanbok Promotion Agency, said, “In order to respond to the recent controversy over hanbok aid raised by China, it is important to continuously research and develop hanbok contents based on historical facts and use them as various contents.”

“In order to preserve the beauty and value of hanbok, a representative symbol of our nation and culture, government agencies such as the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Overseas Cultural Promotion Agency, the Cultural Heritage Administration, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as related organizations such as the Korea Craft and Design Promotion Agency and the Korea Creative Content Agency, must cooperate and cooperate. It is urgent, and we plan to actively work for this.”
