The Korea Health Management Association (Chairman In-Won Kim) Parasite Museum (hereinafter referred to as the Parasite Museum) announced that it will hold the joint exhibition ‘Jeju 1970, Ending Onchocerciasis’ until July 15th.

This exhibition was designed to investigate the history and results of the Jeju Island worm eradication project, which started as a joint academic research between Korea and Japan in the 1970s and expanded to a national level cooperative project.

Filamentous worms are thin filamentous parasites carried by mosquitoes. When infected, it damages the lymphatic vessels, causing edema, and in severe cases, disability such as the legs. It is also called elephant leg disease or pinaerim disease (Jeju Island).

Onchocerciasis (dermoid disease) appeared in Jeju-do until the 1970s. At the time, this disease was recognized as an endemic disease caused by bad luck at birth, but it has now been eradicated through the smooth cooperation of Korean and Japanese scholars and Jeju Islanders.

The Parasite Museum is currently operating on a reservation system due to the COVID-19 situation, and reservations can be made through the Parasite Museum website.

In-Won Kim, Chairman of the Korea Federation of Health Associations, said, “I hope that this exhibition of the Jeju Island worm eradication project will preserve the importance and history of Korea-Japan cooperation and promote exchanges between the two countries in the field of parasite science and research.”
