POSCO to lay the groundwork for entering the industrial gas market

POSCO decided to lay the groundwork for entering the industrial gas market by expanding the oxygen and nitrogen storage tanks in operation at the steelworks.

POSCO announced on the 27th that it held a ceremony for the expansion of oxygen and nitrogen storage tanks at the Pohang Works oxygen plant in the presence of Deok-il Yoon, Director of Management Planning Division, Baek-hee Lee, Director of Pohang Works, and Seok-mo Jeong, Head of Industrial Gas Business Promotion Team.

“Based on POSCO’s largest oxygen and nitrogen production and storage facilities in Korea, POSCO is expected to not only improve the stabilization of supply of industrial gas for downstream industries such as domestic semiconductors and shipbuilding, but also contribute to revitalizing the local economy,” said Yoon Deok-il, head of the business planning division. said.

Currently, POSCO owns 49,000 tons of oxygen and nitrogen storage tanks at Pohang Works and 36,000 tons at Gwangyang Works. During the steelmaking process, oxygen and nitrogen are produced in-house for combustion of iron ore and coal and removal of carbon impurities. The remaining part is stored and then supplied to the outside.

Oxygen and nitrogen are one of the essential industrial gases used not only in steel, but also in various industries such as semiconductors, shipbuilding, chemicals, and automobiles. With the recent boom in the semiconductor and shipbuilding industries in Korea, demand continues to increase, making it particularly important for SMEs to secure a stable supply chain.

In response, POSCO plans to invest about KRW 70 billion and expand the existing oxygen and nitrogen storage tanks to build a system that can actively respond to external demand as well as internal use. By the second half of 2023, the storage tanks at the Pohang and Gwangyang Works will be expanded to 60,000 tons and 46,000 tons, respectively, so that both Works will have the capacity to store a total of 106,000 tons of oxygen and nitrogen.

Based on this, from 2024, 450,000 tons, which is about 10% of the domestic oxygen and nitrogen distribution market demand, will be sold to distributors to begin supplying to the outside world. The daily supply is about 1,200 tons, equivalent to about 60 transport vehicles (tank lorries), and it is expected to contribute to stabilizing supply and demand for gas distributors and small and medium-sized consumers as well as revitalizing the local economy.

Meanwhile, through continuous investment, POSCO is nurturing industrial gas as a new growth engine in line with the company's ESG management. We will build a win-win model for the domestic industrial gas market by promoting the localization of rare gases such as neon (Ne), xenon (Xe), and krypton (Kr) together with small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as expanding the supply of oxygen and nitrogen by utilizing existing facilities. is the policy.
