Pohang City, final selection of national 10 strategic technology ‘quantum’-based public offering project

Pohang City and Max Planck Korea-Postek Research Institute (hereinafter referred to as MPK) participated in a quantum-based nano material technology development project to overcome the limitations of new materials, which was contested by the Ministry of Science and ICT on the 4th (project name: research on quantum physical properties and space-time characteristics of new topological quantum materials). It was announced on the 6th that it was finally selected and secured a total project cost of 30.15 billion won (17.25 billion won from the government) for six years.

According to the city of Pohang, the core of this research project is to develop new quantum materials and devices and replace them with topological quantum material-based topological qubits that can overcome the limitations of current quantum technology. To this end, we plan to conduct research using a large international facility by linking the 4th generation accelerator (PAL-XFEL) in Pohang and European XFEL in Germany.

The city of Pohang plans to establish a world-class research hub by additionally attracting the Helmholtz Research Center along with MPK and the POSTECH Fraunhofer IISB Commercialization Research Center. It plans to promote world-leading research for the development of new-concept quantum material core materials.

In particular, it is expected that this will serve as an opportunity to create a new market by securing leading basic source technology by promoting integrated research in the pre-industrial stage from basic research that extends from the development of quantum material materials to space-time characteristics research, realization of new concept quantum devices, and standardization of devices.

Since its establishment in 2011, Max Planck Korea-Postech Research Center has participated in the participation of 80 researchers to develop ultra-high-speed dynamics and cutting-edge In the field of complex material research, we are striving to secure world-class basic source technology and to nurture experts.

Park Jae-hoon, director of MPK, said, “Utilizing a world-class research platform and state-of-the-art global research facilities, we conduct 'research on quantum physical properties and spatiotemporal properties of new topological quantum materials' to develop quantum material materials and devices optimized for realization of quantum technology that overcome the limitations of existing materials. We will do our best to develop it,” he said.

Acting Pohang Mayor Lee Jang-sik said, “The competition for technological supremacy around the world is getting fiercer, and the quantum field is one of the nation’s top 10 strategic technologies and will play an epochal role in strengthening Korea’s technological competitiveness.” We plan to actively respond to future technology trends by providing full-scale support for manpower training,” he said.
