POSCO to supply steel for tubes for ‘Hyperloop’, an eco-friendly future transportation method

POSCO announced on the 11th that it will supply ‘PosLoop 355’, a steel material for hyperloop tubes, to HARDT in the Netherlands.

A hyperloop is a future eco-friendly transportation method that operates a large vacuum tube and a magnetic levitation capsule at a high speed of 1,000 km/h or more. 8% of energy consumption compared to aircraft and 50% of construction cost compared to highways. The steel required for tube production is 2,000 tons per 1km, and 800,000 tons of steel is required for the construction of the hyperloop between Seoul and Busan (400km).

PosLoop355 is a hot-rolled steel for hyperloop tube developed by POSCO in collaboration with Tata Steel Netherlands. 275 tons will be supplied to the 450m section of the 'Europe Hyperloop Center' test route to be installed in the city.

The European Hyperloop Center is a sub-project of the Hyperloop Development Program (HDP), a national hyperloop development project carried out by HARDT and the Dutch government. HARDT has a track change technology for a hyperloop capsule that runs at high speed and plans to apply it to this test route.

From 2020, POSCO participated in a joint research for the development of hyperloop-exclusive steel and structural solutions with Tata Steel Netherlands in the HDP (Hyperloop Development Program), a Dutch national project hosted by HARDT. POSCO completed the development of PosLoop355 in October of last year, and starting with this delivery, it plans to supply about 1,800 tons of additionally to the 2.7km section of the test route by 2025.

The core of the Hyperloop is to secure the straightness and stability of the tube for high-speed driving. Compared to other materials, steel is recognized as the most suitable hyperloop tube material because of its excellent airtightness that maintains the internal pressure of the hyperloop in a vacuum state for a long time and excellent workability for precise tube connection.

PosLoop355, developed by POSCO, has a vibration absorption capacity 1.7 times higher than that of ordinary steel and has excellent seismic performance, so it is evaluated to further enhance the stability of the hyperloop. POSCO has secured differentiated technological prowess by applying for 9 patents related to structural technology, including a method for manufacturing specialized steel materials for vacuum train tubes.

In particular, POSCO supplied 63 tons of the initial 275 tons to its customer, SeAH Steel, and directly piped a 64m tube with a diameter of 2.5m before supplying it to the Netherlands. This is to jointly respond to the hyperloop market with great growth potential together with customers by not only introducing POSCO's specialized steel materials but also domestic tube manufacturing technology using them.

Dae-eop Kim, head of POSCO’s Hot Rolled Wire Rod Marketing Department, said, “POSCO will establish itself as a global leader in the future eco-friendly mobility market by mass-producing and supplying hyperloop-specialized steel materials for eco-friendly future transportation in collaboration with POSCO Europe, POSCO International, and SeAH Steel.”

Starting with the supply of steel for the test route to the Hyperloop Center in Europe, POSCO plans to actively promote the supply of steel to the hyperloop projects planned to be carried out at home and abroad.
