In Gyeongju, the tap water meter changes to an unmanned automatic meter reading method

Gyeongju City announced on the 23rd that from this year to 2025, 20,000 or 37% of the 54,000 water meters in the region will be replaced with remote meter reading meters using the Internet of Things (IoT).

According to Ki, 'smart remote meter reading' is a method of receiving meter reading values through the Internet of Things after installing a digital water meter and remote meter reading terminal. It is a method that enables scientific management of tap water supply because it can read the meter non-face-to-face and check the usage in real time.

Currently, most of the 54,000 water meters installed throughout Gyeongju are visited and read by a meter reading officer once a month.

Accordingly, Gyeongju City plans to sequentially switch from the monthly visit meter reading method to the regular smart remote meter reading method.

It is expected to be of great help in preventing loss due to leakage as well as real-time accurate meter reading.

To this end, by July, 3,760 water meters in Cheonbuk-myeon, Seomyeon, Naenam-myeon, and Seongdong Market will be replaced at 1.24 billion won, including national and provincial expenses.

Then, by the end of this year, Gyeongju City plans to replace all 3,400 water meters including Jinhyeon-dong and Jungang Market with its own budget.

This is the first time since the introduction of water meters in the early 1930s during the Japanese colonial period that the water meter reading method in Gyeongju has changed in earnest.

Gyeongju City is also considering the development of an operating system that can analyze and utilize meter reading data through ‘smart remote meter reading’ as a long-term plan.

Lee Jin-seop, head of Gyeongju’s clear water business division, said, “Until now, the water meter was merely a device for bill collection. We will do our best to provide water management services,” he said.
