Gyeongju City promotes designation of Gyeongju Hwabaek Convention Center (HICO) as an international conference complex
The city of Gyeongju announced on the 25th that it is promoting the designation of an ‘international conference complex’ to enhance the competitiveness of the MICE (Meeting, Incentives, Convention, Exhibition) industry together with the Gyeongju Hwabaek Convention Center (HICO).
According to the city, HICO, which opened in March 2015, has established itself as a central axis of the MICE industry in Gyeongbuk region by hosting major events such as the APEC Education Ministers’ Meeting in 2012, the World Water Forum in 2015, and the World Heritage Cities Organization World Congress in 2017.
The international conference complex is a place where facilities necessary for revitalization of operations such as international conference facilities and accommodation sales and performance facilities are integrated. In addition, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will receive support from the Tourism Promotion and Development Fund, and in fact, benefits at the level of special tourism zones will be provided, such as excluding business restrictions.
Currently, five locations have been designated: Incheon Songdo, Gyeonggi Goyang, Gwangju Kimdaejung Convention, Daegu EXCO, and Busan BEXCO.
Although the number of international events has declined significantly as the COVID-19 pandemic has spread worldwide over the past two years, the mouse industry remains an attractive sector.
Accordingly, Gyeongju City is promoting the HICO exhibition hall extension project with the goal of completion in 2024 at a project cost of KRW 23.8 billion, and expects to enhance its status as a MICE center city and revitalize the economy.
In addition, starting with the formation of the ‘Gyeongju International Conference Complex,’ in December of last year, they are working together to designate an international conference complex with local hotels, resorts, and Gyeongju World.
Kim Ho-jin, acting mayor of Gyeongju, said, “HICO will be the best place to hold international events when the existing convention center is expanded in 2024. We will make it a mecca city for the regional MICE industry.”
