포항시에 따르면 이날 협약식에는 지자체 대표로 이강덕 포항시장, 운영자 대표로 국민건강보험공단 포항남부지사 이상용 부장, 노동자 대표로 한국노총포항지역본부 정천균 의장, 사용자 대표로 협력사업장 19개소 대표 노준택 대표, 의료계 대표로 포항시의사회 김우석 회장을 비롯해 보건복지부 상병수당추진단과 국민건강보험공단 상병수당추진단, 포항시 유관부서가 참석한 가운데 상병수당 시범사업 실시에 앞서 원활한 사업 추진을 위한 협력체계 구축에 뜻을 모았다.

이번 시범사업은 우리나라의 사회보장체계를 구축하는 과정에 오랜 과제로 남아있던 상병수당을 본격적으로 도입하기 위한 첫발을 내딛는 데 의의가 깊으며, 포항시는 보건복지부 주관으로 진행한 ‘1단계 상병수당 시범사업’ 신청 후 다양한 직업군과 고용 형태로 많은 사례를 발굴하고 사업 효과를 파악하기 위한 최적지임을 적극 주장해 지난 4월 시범사업지로 최종 선정됐다.

이에 따라 오는 7월 4일부터 상병수당 시범사업이 본격 시작되면 포항시에 거주하는 근로자는 누구든지 아플 때 소득에 대한 걱정 없이 제때 치료를 받을 수 있어 질병의 만성화와 중증화를 방지하고 시민의 건강권 증진에도 기여할 것으로 기대된다.
