POSCO and Samsung Electronics to jointly promote the localization of ‘Xenon’, a rare gas for semiconductors

POSCO and Samsung Electronics will jointly promote the localization of ‘Xe’ gas, a core semiconductor material that is currently 100% dependent on imports.

Xenon is one of the rare gases essential for semiconductor production along with neon (Ne) and krypton (Kr). It has been widely used for lighting (lamps) for a long time, but as it has been applied to high-tech industries such as satellite propellants and semiconductors, demand is rapidly increasing. Samsung Electronics is also using xenon gas in its advanced semiconductor production process.

Xenon, a rare gas with a trace amount of about 0.000009% in the air, requires about 10 million cubic meters of air, equivalent to the daily breathing volume of 500,000 adults, to produce 1 cubic meter. For this reason, it is mainly produced in steel mills with large air separation devices, and currently, domestic customers import all of them from the United States, China, and South Africa. Recently, import prices have more than doubled compared to last year due to instability in the global supply chain, and domestic companies are demanding the localization of xenon gas.

In response, POSCO signed a memorandum of understanding with Samsung Electronics on 'semiconductor xenon gas business cooperation' and decided to jointly promote the localization of xenon. POSCO will be in charge of the development, production and supply of Xenon production technology, and Samsung Electronics will be in charge of quality certification and purchase of Xenon.

By the second half of 2023, POSCO plans to develop a facility for extracting xenon from the residual gas emitted from the first large air separation unit in Gwangyang Works, and to begin production of xenon in earnest in 2024 and mass-produce it to Samsung Electronics. Based on this, the plan is to increase production by gradually expanding the xenon gas extraction facility to about 10 air separation units in Pohang and Gwangyang Works by 2027.

Deok-il Yoon, head of POSCO's Business Planning Division, said, "It is meaningful to be able to promote the localization of Xenon by utilizing POSCO's facilities. .

Jun-Young Jeon, Vice President of Purchasing Team at Samsung Electronics’ DS Division, said, “The cooperation between Samsung Electronics and POSCO is expected to contribute to the development of the domestic semiconductor material industry as well as the localization of core semiconductor materials.”

Meanwhile, POSCO has a number of large air separation devices for the production of oxygen, nitrogen, and argon necessary for the steelmaking process. Following the successful localization of neon earlier this year, the company plans to localize Xenon through this cooperation with Samsung Electronics, contributing to the stabilization of the domestic supply chain of major rare gases and leading the strengthening of the industrial gas market.
