시의회에 따르면 이날 여주희 의회운영위원장은 “안동대 의과대학 설립은 지방소멸 위기를 맞고 있는 안동의 교육 수준 향상과 청년인구 유입에 좋은 기회”라며 “양질의 의료 인력 양성과 기존 의료산업 및 연관 산업에 시너지 효과를 불러올 것”이라고 설명했다.

현재 경북의 의료 자원은 전국 꼴찌 수준으로 심각한 의료공백으로 인해 제때 치료받지 못해 사망하는 환자가 매일 3~4건 이상씩 발생하는 상황이다.

이에, “필수 의료분야의 의료 인력 확충은 국민의 생명과 직결된 중요한 문제”라며 “정부는 전국 의료 취약지역의 의료문제를 해결하기 위해 공공성이 담보된 의료정책을 즉각 마련하라”고 강조했다.
