【브레이크뉴스 포항】박영재 기자=에코프로는 올해 포항캠퍼스를 중심으로 국내에만 약 1조2000억 원의 투자를 단행한다고 10일 밝혔다.

이는 폐배터리 재활용부터 전구체 및 수산화리튬 제조, 양극재 생산까지 이차 전지 생태계 조성을 고도화해 미래 시장을 선점하기 위한 포석이다. 대규모 투자를 통해 일자리 창출 등 지역 경제 활성화에도 큰 도움이 될 것으로 기대된다.

에코프로는 전구체 공장 증설에 6900억 원을 투자한다. 이 외에도양극재와 수산화리튬 공장 증설에 각각 3200억 원, 1600억 원, 산업용가스 생산에 100억 원을 투입하는 등 올해 총 1조1800억 원가량을 투자할 계획이다.

에코프로는 이번 투자를 통해 올 상반기 중 에코프로이엠의 하이니켈 양극재(NCA) 생산공장 CAM8, 에코프로이노베이션의 수산화리튬 생산공장 LHM2 공사를 마무리할 예정이다.에코프로머티리얼즈 CPM 및 RMP 3, 4 공장을 각각 건설한다. CPM은 전구체 공장이며 RMP는 전구체 공정 전단계인 황산화 공정이다. 니켈 코발트 망간 원료를 수입해 황산화 공정을 거쳐 전구체가 완성된다.

포항 4캠퍼스 구축이 완료되면 포항캠퍼스는 양극재 27만 톤, 전구체 11만 톤, 수산화리튬 2만6000톤을 생산하는 대규모 이차전지 산업단지로 발돋움한다. 포항캠퍼스에서 생산되는 양극재 27만 톤은 전기차 약 300만 대를 생산할 수 있는 양이다.

에코프로가 지난 2020년부터 조성을 시작한 포항캠퍼스는 총 4개 사이트로 구성돼 있는데 올해 투자금액을 포함해 포항캠퍼스에 투입되는 총 투자액은 5조5000억 원에 이른다.

포항1캠퍼스에는 양극재를 생산하는 에코프로비엠이 입주해 있고 포항 2캠퍼스에는 전구체 원료 및 제품을 생산하는 에코프로머티리얼즈가 입주해 있다. 복합단지인 포항 3캠퍼스는 에코프로이엠(양극재), 에코프로이노베이션(수산화리튬), 에코프로씨엔지(폐배터리 재활용), 에코프로에이피(산소가스)가 입주해 있다.

포항캠퍼스는 포항 영일만일반산업단지 내 전체 부지 약 51만3975㎡ 규모로 조성된 국내 최대 규모의 이차전지 양극소재 집적단지다. 폐배터리 재활용부터 양극재 생산에 이르는 이차전지 공정을 하나의 단지에 구현한 ‘클로즈드 루프 에코 시스템(Closed Loop Eco-system)’을 구축해 국내외 다양한 기업의 벤치마킹 사례로 자리잡고 있다.

에코프로의 대규모 투자로 지역의 신규 일자리도 크게 늘고 있다. 

에코프로에 따르면 2월 현재 포항1∙2∙3캠퍼스에서 근무하는 임직원은 2200여 명으로 에코프로 전체 근무인원(3500여 명)의 63%에 달한다. 내년부터 4캠퍼스가 본격 가동되면 현지 인력 규모도 3000명에 육박할 것으로 전망된다.

에코프로 관계자는 “전방산업이 어려움을 겪고 있지만 시장의 성장성은 의심의 여지가 없기에 계획된 투자를 차질 없이 집행해 나갈 방침”이라며 “선제적인 투자를 통한 고용창출은 지역 경제 활성화에도 큰 도움이 될 것”이라고 말했다.

Ecopro BM, which produces cathode materials, is located in Pohang Campus 1, and Ecopro Materials, which produces precursor raw materials and products, is located in Pohang 2 Campus. Pohang 3 Campus, a complex, is home to EcoPro EM (cathode materials), EcoPro Innovation (lithium hydroxide), EcoPro CNG (waste battery recycling), and EcoPro AP (oxygen gas).

The Pohang Campus is Korea's largest secondary battery anode material integration complex, built on a total area of approximately 513,975 m2 in the Pohang Yeongilman General Industrial Complex. Thanks to EcoPro's large-scale investment, new jobs in the region are also increasing significantly.

According to EcoPro, as of February, there were about 2,200 executives and employees working at Pohang 1, 2, and 3 campuses, accounting for 63% of EcoPro's total workforce (about 3,500). When Campus 4 begins full operation next year, the local workforce is expected to reach close to 3,000.
