한동훈 국민의힘 비대위원장(이하 한동훈)이 도태우 공천을 재검토하라고 지시를 내렸는데, 국민의힘 공관위는 공천 유지를 만장일치로 의결했다. 한동훈의 말 한 마디면 죽는 시늉까지 하던 공천관리위원들이 한동훈의 지시에 대해 일제히 반기를 든 것이다. 한동훈의 명(命)에 대해 반기를 든 공관위의 결정이 공관위원들 스스로한 결정이었을까? 

한동훈이 비대위원장으로 선출된 직후, 한동훈은 윤석열 대통령의 아바타일 뿐이라는 주장들에 대해, "결코 나는 아바타가 아니며 제 목소리를 내겠다."는 취지의 발언을 했다. 그 후 윤석열 대통령의 물밑 지시에 따르면서 나름대로 제 목소리를 내는 쇼를 하면서 잘해 나가는 듯 했으나, 도태우에 이르러서 결국 곪은 상처가 터지고 말았다. 

여느 때의 선거와 마찬가지로 이번 총선도 중도층의 향배가 총선에서의 우열을 결정할 것이다. 그 때문에, 한동훈은 중도층 표심을 끌어안을 묘책을 짜내려고 끙끙대고 있었는데, 도태우 공천 사태가 불거지고 말았다. 한동훈으로서는 심장이 철렁하는 사태가 온 것이다.

그럼, 이 집단 항명 사태의 중심에 있는 도태우는 누구인가? 5·18 광주 민주화운동 ‘북한개입설’을 주장' 하는가 하면 극우 일베 사이트에 여러 차례 글을 올렸고, 심지어  5·18 광주 민주화운동 유혈 진압의 책임자인 전두환이 사망했을 당시 “(전두환이) 평화적인 방법으로 새 시대의 문을 열었다”는 얼토당토 않은 글을 써서 5.18 순국 영령들과, 그 유가족, 그리고 5.18 피해자, 전국의 모든 민주 양심 국민들을 모독한 바가 있는 자가 바로 도태우이다.

이러한 극우 일베를 국민의힘이 공천한다면, 한동훈 스스로가 "5.18 정신의 헌법 수록에 적극 찬성하고, 5·18 민주유공자의  국가유공자 승격도 검토하겠다"고 했던 발언을 스스로 부인하는 셈이 되고 만다. 그가 이제 까지 중도층을 포섭하고, 호남민심을 끌어안으려 했던 그 모든 노력이 <도태우 공천 유지>로 말미암아 물거품이 되고 만 것이다.

그렇다면, 국민위의 공관위는 왜 만장일치로 한동훈의 공천 재검토 요구를 묵살했을까? 단지, 태극기 부대로 대표되는 극소수 극우들 때문에 공천유지를 만장일치로 의결했다고만은 볼 수가 없다.

만장일치의 배후에 한동훈이 기생하고 있는 숙주 윤석열 대통령의 의향이 있었을 것이라고 추측하는 것은 큰 무리가 아니다. 비대위 초기에 한동훈은 디올백 문제에 대해 윤석열-김건희 대통령 부부를 자극하는 발언(어떤 형태로든 사과해야 한다)을 한 적이 있다. 그 발언 직후에 한동훈은  "이관섭 비서실장이 저의 비대위장 사퇴를 종용했다!"는 반역적인 폭로를 했고, 윤석열 대통령과 한동훈 사이에 큰 전쟁이 일어날 것 같았으나, 서산화재현장에서 극적인 화해를 하는 장면을 연출함으로써 이 문제는 유야무야가 된 것처럼 보였다.

하지만 윤석열-김건희 대통령 부부가 누구인가? 한번 눈 밖에 난 자들은 무슨 수를 써서라도 기어코 견제하지 않았는가? 조국의 경우가 예가 될 수 있겠다.

필자는 도태우 공천유지 사태를 보면서, 윤석열-김건희 대통령 부부가 한동훈의 효용이 다 지났다고 결론을 내렸다고 생하는 게 무리일까? 그렇지 않다면, 자기 자신의 명에 의해 비대위장으로 선출된 사람에게 전 국민이 주시하고 있는 가운데 그처럼 창피를 줄 수는 없을 것이다.

비대위원들의 만장일치 항명파동으로 한동훈의 위상은 낙동강 오리알 신세가 되었고,  그래서 한동훈은 하루 동안 출근을 안 하면서 고민을 하지 않았을까? 아무리 머리를 쥐어짠들 명쾌한 해결책이 있겠는가? 윤석열 대통령이 없는 한동훈을 생각할 수가 있을까? 이제 까지 한동훈이 걸어 온 길을 살펴 보면, 한동훈은 없고, 그저 윤석열 대통령의 아바타로서 시켜주는 자리를 감지덕지 받아 챙기면서, 그저 시키는 일들을 "녜이, 녜이!"하면서 수행해온 게 대세였다.  결국, 한동훈은 윤석열 대통령이 없이는 존재 자체가 의미 없는 인물이니, 어쨌든 이제까지의 길을 답습할 수밖에 없으며, 결국 자신만의 정체성이 없는 그는 정치권에서도 그 존립기반을 확보하지 못한 채, 일회용 휴지처럼 언젠가는 버려질 운명일 수도 있다.

하여튼, 도태우 공천으로 말미암아 민주당에는 때 아닌 봄바람이 훈훈하게 불고 있다. 한동훈이 바라던 중도층이 도태우 공천으로 말미암아 그 중 일부는 국민의힘에 등을 돌릴 것이 너무도 뻔하기 때문이다. 그들이 어디에 표를 줄 것인가?

중도층이란 말 그대로의 회색분자가 아니다. 좌도 아니고, 우도 아닌 중간지대가 아니다. 중도층은 사사건건에 따라 다르게 형성된다. 중도란 좌우의 진영 논리에 함몰되지 않고, 자기만의 정의와 판단을 기반으로 하여, 사안에 따라 자기가 가장 옳다고 생각하는 입장에 대해 지지를 하는 유형이기 때문이다.

그들 대다수는 5.18 민주화 운동에 대해 전두환-노태우의 불법 쿠데타에 항거해 일어난 민중의 민주화 운동이라는 개념이 이미 정립되어 있고, 이를 폄훼하거나, 왜곡하는 집단에 대해서는 매서운 회초리를 들 태세가 완비되어 있다. 그러한 중도층의 지지를 얻기 위해서는 5.18 민주화운동을 폄훼, 왜곡하고, 전두환이 평화적으로 정권을 창출했다고 미화하는 도태우에게 준 공천장을 회수함은 물론, 그를 당에서 제명하여, 국민의힘이 결코 5.18 민주화운동과 척을 지는 당이 아님을 만천하에 보여 줄 필요가 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 한동훈이 윤석열의 지시대로 도태우 공천을 기정사실화하는 순간, 전국의 모든 민주 양심 세력들이 국민의힘에 대해 분노함은 물론이고, 대한민국의 깨어있는 중도층 역시 국민의힘을 버릴 것은 당연하다 할 것이다.

이런 상황에 직면하여, 한동훈이 택할 길은 둘 중의 하나밖에 없다. 여기서 결기를 보여 윤석열 대통령이 밀어준 비대위원장직을 내팽개치고 나의 길을 가든지, 아니면 이제까지처럼 윤석열 대통령의 아바타로 만족하면서, 그 그늘에서 정치적인 입지를 키울 것인지? 

하지만 도태후 공천은 총선패배라는 등식이 성립하는 마당에, 한동훈은 이러지도 저러지도 못하는 진퇴양난에 빠져 있는 모양새이다. 주군을 따르자니, 총선패배 후 정치적 사망선고가 기다리고 있고, 나의 길을 가자니, <윤석열 대통령이 없는 한동훈은 바람빠진 풍선이나 마찬가지>니, 그 또한 쉽지 않다. 한동훈, 어찌할 것인가?

By directing, it seemed like this issue had become a solution.

But who are President Yoon Seok-yeol and President Kim Kun-hee? Once they were out of sight, didn't they do whatever it took to keep them in check? The case of Cho Kuk can be an example.

In order to gain the support of such moderates, the People Power Party must not only retrieve the nomination letter given to Do Tae-woo, who denigrates and distorts the May 18 Democratization Movement and glorifies Chun Doo-hwan as having created the regime peacefully, but also expels him from the party. There is a need to show the world that this is not a party that is in cahoots with the May 18 Democratization Movement. Nevertheless, the moment Han Dong-hoon made Do Tae-woo's nomination a fait accompli as instructed by Yoon Seok-yeol, not only did all democratic conscience forces across the country become angry at the People Power Party, but the woke moderates in South Korea also abandoned the People Power Party. It would be natural.

Faced with this situation, Dong-Hoon Han has only one of two paths to take. Will I show my resolve here and throw away the emergency committee chairmanship that President Yoon Seok-yeol gave me and go my own way, or will I remain satisfied with being President Yoon Seok-yeol's avatar as before and grow my political standing in the shadow?

However, in a situation where the nomination of the Empress dowager is equivalent to defeat in the general election, Han Dong-hoon seems to be stuck in a dilemma, unable to do either one way or the other.
