POSCO employees directly identify energy waste at the site
POSCO employees rolled up their sleeves to directly identify energy waste at the steel mill site.
From June to July, POSCO held the <Energy Waste Exposure Contest> in which employees at the Pohang and Gwangyang Steelworks participated. Each employee proposed ideas to save electricity, fuel, water, and gas at their respective sites, and over 50 ideas were collected.
On the 27th of last month, POSCO announced three excellent ideas selected based on their energy saving scale, originality, and feasibility. The first place honor went to Jang Seong-un, a manager at the Stainless Steel Division at POSCO, for his idea of ‘Reducing the number of ladles in operation by improving the stainless steel 2 casting ladle, thereby reducing fuel consumption.’ This is an improvement plan that breaks away from the existing method of operating a single dedicated ladle that is on standby for a long time to maintain heat for producing special steel among the ladles that hold molten iron, and flexibly operates the new general steel ladle to reduce the ladle maintenance waiting time.
Kim Sang-jin, leader of the EIC Technology Department of Gwangyang Steelworks, who won second place, presented the ‘Idea for reducing water usage through differential management of CDQ* cooling water turbidity at Gwangyang 3 Coke Plant.’ Leader Kim predicted that if the current unified cooling water turbidity management standards are reestablished by plant use and location, it will be possible to minimize water waste caused by unnecessary forced drainage and fresh water supply. * CDQ (Coke Dry Quenching): A facility that processes coal at high temperatures in a coke oven to use it as a heat source for melting iron ore, and cools the heated coke with nitrogen.
Kim In-soo, a manager at the steelmaking department of Pohang Iron and Steel Works, who came in third, proposed an idea to reduce unnecessary operating hours and concentrate supply only when gas is generated to prevent waste of nitrogen supplied to prevent CO gas from being emitted when transferring molten iron to the converter, thereby reducing annual nitrogen usage.
POSCO plans to verify the ideas received during the idea suggestion period by the end of the year and separately reward excellent energy-saving cases by the end of the year.
Kim Seong-jun, head of POSCO’s Production Technology Strategy Office, said, “As energy prices increase, the importance of energy efficiency in the operation process is being emphasized day by day,” and “The best way to ensure the effectiveness and feasibility of energy savings is for employees, who are the best experts at each site, to directly participate from the idea discovery stage.”
Meanwhile, POSCO is continuously discovering best practices and ideas for energy saving and working to secure future competitiveness, such as overcoming the energy crisis at its steel mills and achieving carbon neutrality. <저작권자 ⓒ 브레이크뉴스 대구경북 무단전재 및 재배포 금지>
