POSCO Clean Ocean Volunteer Group to Conserve Marine Ecosystem through Underwater Cleanup Activities
POSCO's 'Clean Ocean Volunteer Group' will conduct underwater volunteer activities in the Pohang and Gwangyang areas on the 28th to mark International Coastal Cleanup Day (the third Saturday of September every year).
The POSCO Clean Ocean Volunteer Group is POSCO's representative talent volunteer group that started as an employee skin scuba diving club and was founded in 2009. The Clean Ocean Volunteer Group is leading the way in marine ecosystem conservation activities in the face of ocean desertification, and currently has 379 members active in the Pohang, Gwangyang, and Seoul areas.
In this volunteer activity, the Clean Ocean Volunteer Group will not only collect indiscriminately discarded waste such as waste plastic, waste fishing gear, and tires, but also eradicate harmful organisms such as starfish and sea urchins, which are considered the main culprits of marine resource devastation.
Through this, they will take the lead in preserving marine biodiversity and contribute to improving the convenience of local fishermen by collecting underwater waste and pirate creatures.
POSCO is supporting the members with related training, including equipment such as suits and respirators, as well as training to acquire skin scuba diving licenses. In addition, POSCO introduced the 12-ton lift-only vessel, ‘POSCO Clean Ocean Volunteer Group’ in 2013, to actively support the Clean Ocean Volunteer Group so that they can safely conduct underwater activities.
Lee Hong-no, head of Myodo Fishing Village, a fisherman in the Gwangyang area whose livelihood is the ocean, expressed his gratitude, saying, “The Clean Ocean Volunteer Group cleans up the fishing village every year, which is a great help to our livelihood.”
Meanwhile, the Clean Ocean Volunteer Group is expanding its volunteer activities in areas such as Ulleungdo, Geojedo, and Geomundo, where Triton was dropped, in cooperation with group companies, and is also contributing to the creation of sea forests.
* Triton: An artificial reef made from steel by-products. It contains more minerals useful for the marine ecosystem, such as calcium and iron, than regular natural stones, and has the effect of promoting the growth and photosynthesis of seaweed in the surrounding area.
In addition, in collaboration with the POSCO Eco Farm Volunteer Group, they are spreading warmth to the local community by regenerating marine life collected from the sea into fertilizer and delivering crops grown using it to the underprivileged.
Since its establishment, the POSCO Clean Ocean Volunteer Group has had over 22,000 participants and collected a total of 2,279 tons of marine waste. In recognition of their contributions, the volunteer group received a certificate of appreciation from the Commissioner of the Korea Coast Guard on September 10, Coast Guard Day. <저작권자 ⓒ 브레이크뉴스 대구경북 무단전재 및 재배포 금지>
