대구시는 1993년부터 재미교포 이국진씨가 선친(故이성환)의 유지에 따라 기부한 재산 등으로 현재까지 학업성적이 우수하나 경제적으로 어려움을 겪고 있는 학생들에게 매년 장학금을 지급하고 있다.

신청대상은 공고일(2024.10.16) 현재 대구시에 주소를 두고 대학(교)에 재학 중인 학생이며, 분야별로 일반장학생(성적우수자 50명)과 특별장학생(사회배려계층 또는 자원봉사활동 우수 6명)으로 구분해 10월 16일(수)부터 11월 15일(금)까지 모집한다.

대학생은 기간 내 구비서류를 갖추어 주소지 읍·면·동 행정복지센터에 직접 방문신청하면 구·군에서 대구시로 추천하고, 중·고등학생(30명)은 별도 신청없이 예술·체육·기능 분야 전국대회(광역시·도 규모 이상) 수상 경력이 있는 학생을 대구시 교육청에서 추천한다.

대구시는 심의를 거쳐 장학생을 최종 선발하며, 12월 중 장학금을 지급한다. 지원금액은 대학생은 최대 200만 원 이내, 중·고등학생은 50만 원이다.

정의관 대구광역시 보건복지국장은 “평소 어려운 환경을 극복해 나가면서 열심히 자신의 학업에 정진하고 있는 많은 학생들에게 조금이나마 도움이 됐으면 한다”고 말했다.
