경북도는 27일 문경역 광장에서 이철우 도지사, 국토교통부 백원국 제2차관, 임이자 국회의원, 이종배 국회의원, 김영환 충북도지사, 신현국 문경시장, 국가철도공단 이사장, 시공사 관계자, 지역 주민 등 300여 명이 참석한 가운데 중부내륙선(충주~문경)개통식을 가졌다고 밝혔다.

경북도에 따르면 중부내륙선(이천~문경)은 총연장 93.2km, 총사업비 2조 5,482억원을 투입해 2014년 11월 공사를 시작해 10년 만에 공사를 마무리하고 개통했다.

개통에 이은 첫 운행은 30일 06시 25분 문경에서 판교로 향하는 KTX-이음(10개 역) 상행 첫 기차로, 앞으로 하루에 상행 4회, 하행 4회 운행한다.

1단계 이천(부발)~충주구간(54.0km)은 2021년 12월 개통해 운행하고 있으며, 2단계 충주~문경구간(39.2km)이 완전 개통하게 되어 문경에서~판교까지 KTX-이음(EMU260) 운행으로 1시간 30분대로 수도권 진입이 가능하게 됐다.

또한 현재 실시설계 중인 ▴수서~광주선(복복선 19.4㎞), 타당성조사 및 기본계획수립 중인 ▴문경~김천선(69.8㎞), 기본 및 실시설계 중인 ▴남부내륙철도(김천~거제, 177.9㎞), 사업이 마무리되면 수서에서 문경, 상주, 김천을 거쳐 거제까지 남북 중심지를 종단하는 내륙 간선철도망의 한 축으로 거듭나게 될 전망이다.

경북도는 문경시, 국가철도공단, 철도공사 등과 함께 협력해 철도 운행 계획에 맞춘 버스노선 개편 등 철도 접근성 제고와 문경의 대표적인 관광지인 문경새재 등을 연결하는 연계 교통망을 차질 없이 구축해 나가고 있다.

이철우 경상북도지사는 “이천~문경 철도를 시작으로 경상북도에 철도 5개 노선이 올해 말까지 개통을 앞두고 있어 새로운 철도교통의 시대를 맞이하게 됐다”며 “철도교통을 중심으로 지역 신 거점화를 통해 지역관광과 경제 활성화, 균형발전으로 인구 유입 효과를 극대화해 지역 소멸 위기 극복에 최선을 다하겠다”고 말했다.
