【브레이크뉴스 포항】박영재 기자=포항시는 4일 정부의 국가 AI 전략에 대응해 포항의 새로운 성장동력으로 인공지능 산업 육성에 사활을 걸고 미래 100년을 준비하는 ‘포항 AI혁신위원회’ 첫 회의를 개최했다고 밝혔다.

시에 따르면 포항 AI혁신위원회는 이강덕 포항시장을 포함해 구글, 아마존, 네이버, 포스코 미래기술연구원, KT, 포스텍, 한동대, 카이스트, 서울대, 고려대 및 지역 R&D기관 등 AI 분야 최고 전문가 26인으로 구성된 민·관·산·학·연 협력 네트워크다.

이번 회의에서는 ▲국가 AI컴퓨팅센터 유치 방안 ▲AI가속기센터 민관산학연 협력 모델 구축 ▲초고성능 컴퓨팅 기반 통합데이터 플랫폼 구축 ▲지역 디지털 혁신 글로벌 선도기업 육성 ▲포항시 인공지능 지원 조례 제정 ▲기업하기 좋은 투자 환경을 위한 AI 융자 및 AI펀드 조성 방안 ▲전 산업 인공지능 대전환(AX) 촉진 방안 등을 주요 주제로 다뤘다.

참석자들은 포항이 4세대 방사광가속기와 같은 첨단 연구시설을 보유하고 있는 국내 유일의 도시로 AI기술 발전에 필수적인 대규모 데이터 처리와 분석이 가능한 환경을 갖추고 있다며, 포항시가 사활을 걸고 추진 중인 국가 AI컴퓨팅센터와 관련해 포항이 최적지라는데 공감했다.

또한 포항시는 포스텍 및 한동대를 중심으로 3,000여 명의 석·박사급 연구 인력을 보유하고 있는 것은 물론 포스텍 내 반도체기술융합센터 등의 연구소는 AI기반 신소재 개발과 초저전력 컴퓨팅 기술 연구에 앞장서고 있어 이러한 역량은 AI컴퓨팅센터 유치 시 국내뿐 아니라 글로벌 AI 시장에서도 경쟁력을 갖출 수 있는 기반이 될 수 있을 것으로 전망했다.

아울러 참석자들은 미래 인공지능 시대를 책임질 국가AI컴퓨팅센터 유치를 위해 포항 지역 내 AI컴퓨팅 기반 인프라 조성의 발 빠른 대응이 중요하다고 조언했으며, 시는 초고성능 AI컴퓨팅 연구데이터 통합플랫폼, 육양국 연계 글로벌 데이터센터 캠퍼스 등 AI 컴퓨팅 기반 인프라 조성에 더욱 속도를 낼 방침을 설명했다.

또한 포항시는 AI가 가져오는 인공지능 대전환의 속도전에서 가장 중요한 것을 AI 인재 양성으로 보고, 매년 60여 명의 석·박사급 AI전문 인력을 양성하는 포스텍 인공지능대학원 지원 사업과 산업 AI분야 전문인력 양성을 지원하는 산업인공지능 제조혁신 전문인력 양성 등 다양한 사업으로 인재 양성에 박차를 가하겠다고 밝혔다.

이강덕 시장은 “이번 회의는 지역 AI 발전 전략을 논의하며 미래 100년을 준비하는 지속 가능한 발전 모델을 모색하는 자리”였다며 “포항이 가진 잠재력을 활용해 국가AI컴퓨팅센터를 포항에 유치할 수 있도록 민·관·산·학·연이 협력해 힘을 모아가겠다”고 말했다.

한편 포항시는 이날 회의에서 나온 의견을 바탕으로 인공지능 생태계 조성을 위한 기반 구축에 총력을 다하는 한편 지자체, 기업, 대학, 연구기관 등과 지속적인 공유로 AI 경쟁력을 강화해 미래 인공지능 시대를 선도해 나간다는 방침이다.
