천년고도 경주에서 열리는 ‘APEC 정상회의’가 여덟 달 앞으로 다가왔습니다.

오는 10월 말 개최되는 APEC 정상회의는 경주의 위상을 드높이고, 미래를 향해 한 단계 도약할 수 있는 계기가 될 것입니다. 현재 경주시는 APEC 정상회의의 성공을 위해 모든 역량을 집중하고 있습니다.

정상회의장 개보수, 숙박시설 정비, 미디어센터, 만찬장, 전시장 건립 등 기본 인프라 구축에 박차를 가하고 있습니다. 이와 함께 우리 경주의 깨끗하고 아름다운 모습을 보여주기 위해 대대적인 도로 정비와 환경 개선 사업을 진행하고 있습니다.

이를 통해 경주가 찬란한 역사를 품은 문화도시이자 현대적 관광 인프라를 갖춘 도시라는 것을 세계에 널리 알릴 생각입니다.

주회의장인 보문관광단지는 물론 불국사, 경주IC 등 주요 진입로를 포함한 5개 노선에 총 사업비 247억 원을 투입해 도로 포장, 조명 설치, 보행로 및 자전거도로 정비 등 대대적인 정비를 합니다.

특히 보문관광단지는 110억 원의 예산을 투입해 음악분수광장, 산책로 정비, 경관조명, 미디어파사드 등 야간 경관을 더욱 아름답게 조성할 계획입니다.

또한, 시는 주요 진입로를 중심으로 노후 주택과 담장 정비 사업도 함께 추진하고 있습니다. 울산 방면, 포항 방면, 경주IC 방면 등 주요 도로변의 노후된 건축물과 담장을 경주만의 특색있는 디자인을 입혀 도시의 품격을 한층 높이고자 합니다.

이를 위해 지난해 12월 노선별 사전 조사를 완료했으며, 주택가 담장 25곳을 포함해 가로변에 역사성과 현대적 감각이 조화를 이루는 디자인을 적용할 예정입니다.

경주시의 이 같은 노력에 대해 너무 외형에만 치우치는 것 아니냐는 비판이 있을 수도 있습니다. 당연히 행사 내용이 더 중요합니다. 하지만 사람을 만났을 때 첫 인상이 중요하듯 도시가 주는 이미지도 중요합니다.

이번 APEC정상회의 참석을 위해 세계 많은 정상들과 고위급 각료들, 글로벌CEO들과 전세계 언론인들이 경주를 처음 찾게 될 텐데, 그들은 경주라는 창을 통해 대한민국을 보게 될 것입니다. 그만큼 경주가 주는 첫인상이 그 어느 때보다 중요한 시점입니다.

사실 행사 자체는 역대 어느 정상회의 보다 더 잘 치를 자신이 있습니다. 올림픽과 월드컵도 성공적으로 치른 대한민국이잖습니까!

비록 경주가 작은 지방도시이지만, 세계NGO총회를 비롯해 150여 차례의 대규모 국제행사를 성공적으로 치른 경험이 있습니다.

APEC 정상회의의 성공은 단순한 행사 개최에 그치는 것이 아니라, 경주의 미래를 바꾸는 중요한 기회가 될 것입니다. 행사의 성공을 위해서는 무엇보다 시민들의 적극적인 참여와 협조가 필수적입니다. 따뜻한 미소와 친절, 질서와 청결로 글로벌 시민의식을 보여줘야 합니다.

아름다운 도시환경 조성을 위해 경주시는 매월 네 번째 수요일을 ‘APEC 클린데이’로 지정하고, 민관이 함께하는 손님맞이 운동을 이어가고 있습니다.

APEC 클린데이를 통해 지역 사회의 자발적 참여를 유도하고, 노후 시설물과 다수 민원 취약지 등을 중점적으로 정비할 계획입니다. 또한 웃는 얼굴로 인사하기, 내 집, 내 점포 앞 치우기, 우리 동네 꽃밭 가꾸기, 집 앞에 꽃 화분 내놓기 등 ‘시민과 함께하는 APEC 경주 10대 실천과제’를 발굴해 실천해 나갈 예정입니다.

경주는 신라 천년의 수도로서 동아시아 문화와 교류했던 역사적 전통을 지닌 도시입니다. 이제 우리는 그 유산을 계승해 21세기 국제도시로 도약하는 길목에 서 있습니다. APEC 정상회의는 경주의 새로운 도약을 위한 출발점이며, 이를 통해 경주는 세계가 주목하는 도시로 거듭날 것입니다.

남은 기간 철저한 준비로 성공적인 APEC 개최를 이루고, 이를 발판 삼아 경주의 위상을 한층 더 높이겠습니다. 시민 여러분의 지속적인 관심과 적극적인 참여를 부탁드립니다.

In addition, we are carrying out large-scale road maintenance and environmental improvement projects to show the clean and beautiful appearance of our Gyeongju.

Through this, we plan to let the world know that Gyeongju is a cultural city with a brilliant history and a city with modern tourism infrastructure.

A total project cost of 24.7 billion won will be invested in five routes, including the main conference hall, Bomun Tourist Complex, Bulguksa Temple, and Gyeongju IC, to carry out large-scale maintenance, including road paving, installing lighting, and improving pedestrian and bicycle paths.

In particular, Bomun Tourist Complex plans to invest 11 billion won to create a more beautiful nighttime landscape with a music fountain plaza, walking path maintenance, landscape lighting, and media façade.

In addition, the city is also promoting a project to maintain old houses and fences centered on major access roads. The city aims to further enhance the city’s quality by giving old buildings and fences on major roads such as Ulsan, Pohang, and Gyeongju IC a unique design.

To this end, a preliminary survey of each route was completed in December of last year, and a design that harmonizes historical and modern sensibilities will be applied to 25 residential fences along the roadside.

There may be criticism that Gyeongju City’s efforts are too focused on appearance. Naturally, the content of the event is more important. However, just as first impressions are important when meeting someone, the image a city gives off is also important.

Many world leaders, high-ranking ministers, global CEOs, and journalists from around the world will visit Gyeongju for the first time to attend the APEC Summit, and they will see South Korea through the window of Gyeongju. In fact, I am confident that the event itself will be better than any other summit in history. After all, South Korea has successfully hosted the Olympics and the World Cup!

Although Gyeongju is a small provincial city, it has successfully hosted over 150 large-scale international events, including the World NGO Conference.

The success of the APEC Summit is not simply about hosting an event, but will be an important opportunity to change the future of Gyeongju. In order for the event to be successful, the active participation and cooperation of citizens are essential. We must show global citizenship through warm smiles, kindness, order, and cleanliness.

In order to create a beautiful urban environment, Gyeongju City has designated the fourth Wednesday of every month as ‘APEC Clean Day’ and is continuing a public-private guest-welcoming campaign.

Through APEC Clean Day, we plan to encourage voluntary participation from the local community and focus on renovating old facilities and vulnerable areas for many complaints. We also plan to discover and implement the ‘10 APEC Gyeongju Action Tasks with Citizens’ such as greeting people with a smile, cleaning up in front of my house and store, cultivating a flower garden in my neighborhood, and placing flower pots in front of my house.

Gyeongju is a city with a historical tradition of interacting with East Asian culture as the capital of Silla for a thousand years. Now, we stand at the crossroads of inheriting that legacy and leaping forward as an international city in the 21st century. The APEC Summit is the starting point for Gyeongju’s new leap forward, and through this, Gyeongju will be reborn as a city that the world will pay attention to.
