도널드 트럼프 미 대통령은 철강과 알루미늄 수입품 전체에 25%의 관세를 부과하는 행정명령에 지난 10일 서명한 뒤 이번 관세에 예외나 면제가 없다고 밝힌 바 있다.

이에 따라 한국과 캐나다, 멕시코 등에서 미국으로 수입되는 모든 철강 및 알루미늄 제품에 대해 내달 12일(현지시간)부터 25%의 관세가 부과될 전망이다.

이에 이강덕 시장은 11일 호소문을 발표해 여·야·정부를 막론하고 이 상황을 엄중히 받아들여 특단의 대책과 지원책을 서둘러 마련해야 한다고 강조했다.

이 시장은 글로벌경기 침체와 중국산 철강 공세, 철강 수요 감소로 인해 포스코와 현대제철을 비롯한 국내 철강업계가 위기에 직면해 있는 상황에서 이번 관세 부과 조치 대응에 시기를 놓친다면 우리나라 경제는 더 큰 충격으로 회복 불능의 상황에 놓일 수 있다고 지적했다.
