19일 경주시와 경북경찰청 광역수사대에 따르면, 지난해 11월 17일 밤 10시께 경주 동천동 주택가에서 흉기를 든 남성들이 서로 쫓고 쫓기는 집단 난투극이 벌어졌다.

이 장면을 목격한 경주시 건설과 소속 김준현(42) 주무관은 사건이 녹화됐을 가능성이 높은 차량 블랙박스를 확인하고, 해당 차량 번호를 경찰에 신고했다. 그의 신고는 사건 수사에 결정적인 단서를 제공했다.

경찰은 김 주무관이 제공한 정보를 바탕으로 수사를 진행, 지난달 9일 새벽 동남아 국적 남성 9명을 검거했다.

이 중 4명은 특수폭행 등 혐의로 구속영장이 신청됐으며, 나머지 5명은 강제추방 조치를 위해 출입국 당국에 인계됐다.
