이번 착공식에는 이철우 경상북도지사를 비롯해 김형동 국회의원, 임종식 교육감, 박성만 도의장, 권기창 안동시장 등 지역 주요 인사들과 500여 명의 주민들이 참석했다. 이들은 전국 최초로 은퇴한 과학자들을 위한 고급 주거단지 조성에 대한 큰 기대감을 드러냈다.

경북도는 저출생, 고령화, 기후변화 등의 사회적 문제를 해결하고 지방정부 차원에서 새로운 성장 동력을 찾기 위해 K-과학자마을 조성사업을 구상했다. 이 사업은 은퇴한 과학자들의 잠재력을 활용해, 그들이 거주하고 연구하며 후학 양성 및 창업 활동을 동시에 할 수 있는 혁신적이고 지속 가능한 공간을 제공하기 위해 기획됐다.

K-과학자마을은 경북도청신도시 2단계 내, 검무산을 등지고 호민지를 바라보는 이상적인 배산임수의 입지에 조성된다. 이 마을은 은퇴한 과학자들이 단독형 주택과 공유 사무실, 콘퍼런스홀, 라운지 등 다양한 시설을 이용하며 거주하고 연구할 수 있는 복합적인 환경을 제공한다.

이 마을의 설계에는 승효상 건축가를 비롯한 국내외 유명 건축가들이 참여해, 시대와 세대를 초월한 가치를 지닌 천년건축의 지향점을 실체적으로 구현하는 모델을 제시했다. 경북도는 이를 통해 K-과학자마을이 지역 성장의 새로운 동력이 될 것이라고 강조했다.

또한, 경북도는 이번 프로젝트를 통해 천년건축의 확산 및 보급을 목표로 하고 있으며, 지역 문화관광 자원으로서 생활 인구 유입에도 기여할 계획이다. 이를 위한 첫 걸음으로, K-과학자 15명을 선발해 본격적인 연구 활동을 시작하고, 한국과학기술단체총연합회, 국가과학기술연구회 등 관계 기관과 협력하여 경북연구원에 K-과학자 지원 조직을 신설할 예정이다.

이철우 경상북도지사는 “현재 대한민국은 수도권 집중화로 인한 인구 감소, 성장 둔화, 지역 소멸 등 심각한 위기를 겪고 있다”며, “‘K-과학자마을’과 같은 지방정부 주도의 혁신적 성장 모델이 지속 가능한 미래의 해답이 될 것”이라고 밝혔다. 

이 지사는  또한 “K-과학자마을의 성공적인 추진으로 인재가 모인 곳에 기업이 찾아오고, 세계적 인재 배출과 기술 주도 신생 기업의 요람이 될 것”이라며, 경북의 성장이 곧 국가의 성장이라는 신념을 밝혔다. 이철우 지사는 “잠재력 높은 은퇴과학자들을 유치하고 지속 가능한 발전을 위해 지원을 아끼지 않겠다”고 덧붙였다.

The K-Scientist Village will be built in the second phase of the Gyeongbuk Provincial Office New Town, in an ideal location with a back mountain and a river facing the Hominji area and backed by Mt. Geummusan. The village will provide a complex environment where retired scientists can reside and conduct research using a variety of facilities, including single-family homes, shared offices, conference halls, and lounges.

Renowned domestic and international architects, including Seung Hyo-sang, participated in the design of the village, presenting a model that tangibly embodies the goal of millennium architecture with values ​​that transcend time and generations. Gyeongbuk Province emphasized that the K-Scientist Village will become a new driving force for regional growth through this.

Governor Lee Cheol-woo of Gyeongsangbuk-do Province said, “Currently, South Korea is experiencing a serious crisis due to population decline, slowing growth, and regional extinction caused by the concentration of the metropolitan area,” and added, “Innovative growth models led by local governments, such as the ‘K-Scientist Village,’ will be the answer to a sustainable future.” The governor also said, “With the successful implementation of the K-Scientist Village, companies will flock to places where talents gather, and it will become a cradle for producing world-class talents and technology-driven startups,” expressing his belief that the growth of Gyeongsangbuk-do is the growth of the nation.
