【브레이크뉴스 포항】박영재 기자=포스코의 사내벤처 기업인 이옴텍이 철강 부산물인 슬래그와 폐플라스틱을 결합한 새로운 철도 침목을 개발하는 데 성공했다.

이 혁신적인 개발은 포스코의 동반성장 프로그램인 '성과공유제'의 일환으로 이루어졌으며, 환경적 문제를 해결하고 동시에 원가 절감 효과까지 거둔 것으로 평가된다.

침목은 철도에서 열차를 지탱하는 중요한 역할을 하는 부품으로, 기존의 침목은 주로 고가의 유리섬유를 사용하여 제작됐다. 그러나 이옴텍은 이를 대체할 수 있는 복합재 '슬래스틱(Slastic)'을 개발, 기존의 침목 소재를 슬래스틱으로 일부 대체함으로써 원가 절감을 실현했다. 더 나아가, 슬래스틱 침목은 100% 재활용이 가능하여 환경 보호에도 기여하는 장점을 갖추고 있다.

이옴텍은 2019년 포스코 사내벤처 1기 출범 당시부터 슬래그와 폐플라스틱을 활용한 복합재 개발에 집중해왔다. 초기에 제철소의 고열과 고중량 환경에서의 테스트 실패를 겪기도 했지만, 포스코와의 긴밀한 기술 협력과 지속적인 연구개발을 통해 문제를 해결하고 성공적인 결과를 도출했다.

 그 결과, 슬래스틱 침목은 포스코 포항제철소의 철도 현장에 적용되었으며, 폐자원의 선순환과 철도 인프라의 내구성 강화를 동시에 실현하는 중요한 사례로 평가받고 있다.

이옴텍의 박영준 대표는 "슬래스틱 침목 개발을 통해 지속 가능한 미래를 만들어 가고 있다"며 "앞으로도 이 기술력을 바탕으로 다양한 제품을 개발해 나갈 것"이라고 밝혔다.

한편, 포스코는 벤처 생태계 강화를 위해 지속적으로 다양한 노력을 기울이고 있으며, 탄소중립 제철 기술과 이차전지 소재 기술 등 혁신 기술 확보를 위해 벤처기업과의 오픈 협업(Open Collaboration)을 강화할 계획이다. 또한, 2025년 7월에는 새로운 아이디어 창출을 목표로 포스코 사내벤처 7기 기업을 모집할 예정이다.

POSCO's in-house venture develops innovative railroad sleepers using steel byproducts

Iomtech, an in-house venture company of POSCO, has succeeded in developing a new railroad sleeper that combines slag, a steel byproduct, and waste plastic.

This innovative development was carried out as part of POSCO's 'Performance Sharing System', a joint growth program, and is evaluated to have solved environmental problems and achieved cost reduction effects at the same time.

Sleepers are important components that support trains on railways, and existing sleepers were mainly made using expensive glass fiber. However, Iomtech developed a composite material called 'Slastic' that can replace this, and realized cost reduction by partially replacing existing sleeper materials with slastic. Furthermore, slastic sleepers have the advantage of being 100% recyclable, contributing to environmental protection.

Since the launch of the first POSCO in-house venture in 2019, Iomtech has focused on developing composite materials using slag and waste plastic. Although it initially experienced test failures in the high-temperature and high-weight environment of the steel mill, it solved the problem and achieved successful results through close technical cooperation with POSCO and continuous research and development.

As a result, the slattic sleeper was applied to the railway site of POSCO Pohang Steelworks, and it is evaluated as an important case that simultaneously realizes the virtuous cycle of waste resources and strengthens the durability of railway infrastructure.

Meanwhile, POSCO is continuously making various efforts to strengthen the venture ecosystem, and plans to strengthen open collaboration with venture companies to secure innovative technologies such as carbon-neutral steelmaking technology and secondary battery material technology. In addition, in July 2025, POSCO plans to recruit the 7th batch of in-house venture companies with the goal of creating new ideas.
