【브레이크뉴스 경주】박희경 기자=동국대학교 WISE캠퍼스는 오는 4월 24일부터 5월 11일까지 경주시 형산강 금장대 일원 및 경주시내 곳곳에서 ‘2025 형산강 연등문화축제’를 개최한다고 밝혔다.

이번 축제는 신라시대부터 이어져 온 전통 연등회의 맥을 계승하고, 불기 2569년 부처님오신날을 봉축하기 위해 마련됐다. ‘세상에 평안을, 마음에 자비를’이라는 주제로 열리는 이번 축제는 형산강 일대를 자비의 등불로 물들이며 시민과 관광객들에게 평화와 행복의 메시지를 전할 예정이다.

축제는 4월 24일 오후 6시 30분 개막 축하공연을 시작으로 개막식과 점등식, 제등행렬이 이어지며 본격적인 막을 올린다. 이어 26일까지는 장엄등 전시와 다양한 부대행사가 펼쳐지고, 5월 11일까지는 금장대 일원에 조성된 ‘연등숲’과 거리 곳곳에 설치된 연등 전시가 시민과 관광객들을 맞이한다.

특히 축제의 하이라이트인 ‘제등행렬’은 동국대 WISE캠퍼스를 비롯해 대한불교조계종 불국사, 대한불교진각종, 한국불교태고종, 대한불교천태종 등 지역 불교계와 경주시민, 학생 등 2천여 명이 참여한 가운데 성대하게 펼쳐질 예정이다. 행렬은 금장대 둔치를 출발해 경주여고 삼거리, 동대 네거리, 성건주민센터, 중앙시장, 신한은행 네거리를 거쳐 봉황대에 이르는 코스로 진행되며, 다채로운 볼거리를 제공할 것으로 기대된다.

법천 스님(형산강연등문화축제 봉축위원회 집행위원장, 동국대 WISE캠퍼스 정각원장)은 “형산강을 밝히는 자비의 등불이 시민과 관광객들에게 마음의 평안을 전하는 축제가 되기를 바란다”고 전했다.

류완하 동국대 WISE캠퍼스 총장도 “형산강 연등문화축제가 지역을 대표하는 문화행사로 자리잡은 만큼, 시민과 관광객 모두가 즐겁고 아름다운 추억을 만들 수 있기를 기대한다”며 “이 축제가 자비와 평안, 그리고 경주의 역사문화가 어우러진 의미 있는 시간이 되기를 바란다”고 밝혔다.

Dongguk University WISE Campus announced that it will hold the ‘2025 Hyeongsan River Lantern Culture Festival’ from April 24 to May 11 in the Hyeongsan River Geumjangdae area and various locations in Gyeongju City.

This festival was created to continue the tradition of the lantern festival that has been held since the Silla Dynasty and to celebrate Buddha’s birthday in the year 2569 of the Buddhist calendar. The festival will begin with an opening celebration performance at 6:30 PM on April 24, followed by the opening ceremony, lighting ceremony, and lantern parade. Until the 26th, there will be a grand lantern exhibition and various side events, and until May 11th, the ‘Lantern Forest’ created in the Geumjangdae area and lantern exhibitions installed throughout the streets will welcome citizens and tourists.

In particular, the ‘Lantern Parade,’ the highlight of the festival, is expected to be held grandly with the participation of 2,000 people including local Buddhist circles such as Dongguk University WISE Campus, Bulguksa Temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, Jin Gak Jong of Korean Buddhism, Taego Jong of Korean Buddhism, Cheontae Jong of Korean Buddhism, Gyeongju citizens, and students. The parade will start from Geumjangdae Dunchi and proceed through Gyeongju Girls’ High School Intersection, Dongdae Intersection, Seonggeon Community Center, Jungang Market, Shinhan Bank Intersection, and Bonghwangdae, and is expected to provide a variety of things to see.

Monk Beopcheon (Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Hyeongsan River Lantern Festival and Director of the Dongguk University WISE Campus) said, “I hope that the lanterns of mercy that light up the Hyeongsan River will become a festival that conveys peace of mind to citizens and tourists.”
