포항시는 지난 14일부터 16일까지 경기도 고양 킨텍스에서 열린 ‘2025 세계 지방정부 기후총회’에 참석해 글로벌 기후 리더십을 강화하고, 세계총회 유치를 위한 국제적 공감대 형성에 집중했다고 밝혔다.

이번 총회는 이클레이(ICLEI·지속가능성을 위한 세계지방정부협의회)와 경기도가 공동 주최했으며, ‘모두를 위한 과학 기반의 녹색 전환’을 주제로 전 세계 50여 개 지방정부에서 80명 이상의 시장 및 고위급 인사들이 참여했다.

포항시는 이번 행사에서 지속가능한 도시 전환 사례를 공유하며 기후 대응 선도 도시로서의 입지를 확고히 했다. 특히, 15일 열린 이클레이 한국총회에서 ‘사람 중심의 공정한 전환을 위한 지방정부 네트워크’에 공식 가입하며, 국제사회와 지속가능한 정책을 함께하겠다는 의지를 드러냈다.

이날 이강덕 포항시장은 ‘지속 가능한 녹색성장 도시 포항’이라는 비전을 발표하며, 철강 중심 산업도시에서 친환경 미래 산업 도시로의 전환 사례와 시민 참여 기반 정책을 소개했다. 또한, ‘자연과 조화로운 도시의 기후 행동’을 주제로 열린 세션에서 의장으로 나서 포항시의 전략과 경험을 공유했다.

포항시는 총회 기간 동안 이클레이 회장 카트린 휀펠트 야메(스웨덴 말뫼 시장), 사무총장 지노 반 베긴, 캐나다 퀘벡주 수석대표 다미앙 페레이라 등과의 고위급 면담을 통해 2027년 ICLEI 세계총회 포항 유치의 필요성과 준비 상황을 설명하고 지지를 요청했다.

이강덕 시장은 “포항은 철강 산업의 도시에서 기후위기 대응을 선도하는 도시로 거듭나고 있다”며 “2027년 ICLEI 세계총회를 포항에 유치해, 지속 가능한 미래를 전 세계 도시들과 함께 설계해 나가겠다”고 강조했다.

한편 포항시는 오는 4월 30일, 독일 본에 위치한 이클레이 세계본부에 2027년 총회 유치 신청서를 공식 제출할 예정이다. 지난해부터 다양한 환경 네트워크와 협력하며 유치 기반을 다져온 포항시는, 이번 총회 참여를 계기로 국제적인 입지를 한층 더 강화했다.

Pohang City has entered into a full-scale international diplomatic battle to host the 2027 ICLEI World Congress.

During the General Assembly, Pohang City explained the necessity and preparation status of hosting the 2027 ICLEI World Congress in Pohang through high-level meetings with ICLEI President Katrin Feunfeldt-Jamme (Mayor of Malmö, Sweden), Secretary General Gino van Begin, and Quebec Delegate Damien Pereira, and requested support.

Mayor Lee Kang-deok emphasized, “Pohang is transforming from a city of steel industry to a city leading the response to the climate crisis,” and “We will host the 2027 ICLEI World Congress in Pohang and design a sustainable future together with cities around the world.” Meanwhile, Pohang City plans to officially submit an application to host the 2027 General Assembly to the ICLEI World Headquarters in Bonn, Germany, on April 30.
