‘파드힐리 증설 프로젝트’는 세계 최대 석유회사인 아람코가 기존 가스 플랜트의 처리 용량을 약 1.6배 확대하는 대형 인프라 사업이다. 이번 증설을 통해 아람코는 자국 내 에너지 수요는 물론, 글로벌 공급망 안정화에도 기여할 계획이다.

포스코가 납품한 HIC 강재는 고온·고압의 가혹한 환경에서 수소에 의해 발생하는 균열을 효과적으로 방지하는 특수 강재로, 주로 석유·가스 플랜트의 강관이나 압력 용기 제작에 사용된다. 특히, 이번 납품은 HIC 강재가 플랜트 부문에 적용된 첫 사례로 기록됐다.

또한 포스코의 강재는 국내 배관·압력용기·피팅 제작사를 통해 완제품으로 가공되며, 이에 따라 국내 플랜트 산업의 경쟁력도 한층 강화됐다. 프로젝트 초기에는 유럽 제작사들의 참여가 유력했으나, 포스코의 납품 결정에 따라 국내 업체들로 전환됐다. 현재 배관은 현대스틸파이프와 세아제강, 압력용기는 범한메카텍, 피팅은 태광이 각각 제작을 담당하고 있다.

이와 같은 공급 구조는 국내 후방 산업의 기술력이 전방 산업의 수주 경쟁력으로 연결되는 선순환 모델로 평가된다.

포스코 관계자는 “보호무역주의와 글로벌 통상 환경의 불확실성이 지속되는 상황에서도 고부가가치 제품 중심의 수요 발굴과 판로 확대를 통해 초격차 경쟁력을 확보해 나가고 있다”며 “앞으로도 다양한 고객사와 협력을 강화해 국내 제조업의 성장과 경쟁력 향상에 앞장설 것”이라고 밝혔다.

POSCO has proven its technological competitiveness in the high-value-added energy steel market by supplying hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC)-resistant steel to Saudi Aramco’s ‘Fahili Gas Plant Expansion Project.’

The ‘Fahili Expansion Project’ is a large-scale infrastructure project in which Saudi Aramco, the world’s largest oil company, will expand the processing capacity of its existing gas plant by approximately 1.6 times. Through this expansion, Aramco plans to contribute to stabilizing the global supply chain as well as domestic energy demand.

The HIC steel supplied by POSCO is a special steel that effectively prevents cracking caused by hydrogen in harsh environments of high temperature and high pressure, and is mainly used to manufacture steel pipes and pressure vessels for oil and gas plants. In particular, this delivery marked the first case in which HIC steel was applied to the plant sector.

Aramco’s HIC steel for plants requires stricter quality standards and testing procedures than the international standard (NACE TM0284), and has been exclusively supplied by European steel companies. To date, only nine steel companies, including POSCO, have obtained Aramco’s certification, and with this supply, POSCO has further strengthened its technological prowess and market dominance in the high value-added energy steel market.

In addition, POSCO’s steel is processed into finished products through domestic pipe, pressure vessel, and fitting manufacturers, which has further strengthened the competitiveness of the domestic plant industry. In the early stages of the project, participation by European manufacturers was a strong possibility, but it was switched to domestic companies following POSCO’s decision to supply. Currently, Hyundai Steel Pipe and SeAH Steel are in charge of manufacturing pipes, Bumhan Mecatec is in charge of manufacturing pressure vessels, and Taekwang is in charge of manufacturing fittings.

This supply structure is evaluated as a virtuous cycle model in which the technological prowess of domestic downstream industries is linked to the competitiveness of upstream industries in winning orders.
