이번 간담회는 지난 7월 31일 발표된 한미 관세협상 결과에서 철강 품목에 대해 기존 50%의 고율 관세가 유지되면서, 대미 수출 비중이 높은 포항 지역 철강기업들의 부담이 커짐에 따라 마련됐다.

간담회에는 포스코, 현대제철, 동국제강, 세아제강 등 주요 철강 수출기업 관계자를 비롯해 포항상공회의소, 포항철강관리공단 등 유관기관이 참석해 수출 현장의 애로사항을 공유하고 피해 최소화 방안에 대한 의견을 나눴다.

참석 기업들은 고율 관세 지속으로 인해 ▲가격 경쟁력 약화 ▲물류비 부담 증가 등의 현실적인 어려움을 호소하며, 정부와 지자체 차원의 실질적인 대응책과 지원 방안 마련을 요청했다.

이에 포항시는 기업들의 의견을 바탕으로 중앙정부와의 긴밀한 협조 체계를 구축하고, 관세 정책 변화에 능동적으로 대응하는 한편, 철강산업 지원특별법 제정 등 근본적인 대책 마련에 최선을 다하겠다는 방침을 밝혔다.

이강덕 포항시장은 “미국의 관세 압박으로 지역 철강기업들이 겪고 있는 위기는 단순한 산업 차원을 넘어 국가 산업 경쟁력과 직결되는 중대한 문제”라며 “정부가 철강산업 지원특별법 제정 등 실효성 있는 대책을 조속히 마련해야 한다”고 강조했다.

한편, 이번 한미 관세협상 결과에는 ▲자동차 등 상호 관세 15% 부과 ▲3,500억 달러 규모 대미 투자펀드 조성 ▲1,000억 달러 규모의 미국산 에너지 구매 등 주요 합의가 포함됐다. 그러나 철강 등 일부 민감 품목에 대해서는 기존 고율 관세가 유지되면서 지역 철강업계의 부담은 당분간 지속될 전망이다.

Meanwhile, the results of the Korea-US tariff negotiations included key agreements, including the imposition of a 15% reciprocal tariff on automobiles, the establishment of a US$350 billion investment fund for the US, and the purchase of US$100 billion in US energy products. However, the existing high tariffs on some sensitive products, such as steel, will remain in place, which is expected to continue to burden the local steel industry for the foreseeable future.
