시는 지난 6일 포항 구룡포 과메기문화관 잔디광장에서 ‘제주해녀상 제막식’과 ‘동백나무 기념식수 행사’를 개최했다. 이번 행사는 제주특별자치도지사가 포항시에 기증한 제주해녀상을 공개하고, 제주의 상징수인 동백나무를 함께 식수함으로써 양 지역의 역사적 인연과 문화적 유대를 재확인하는 의미를 담았다.

제주해녀상은 해녀의 자부심과 강인한 생명력을 형상화한 조형물이다. 오른손에 테왁망사리, 왼손에 까꾸리를 든 해녀의 모습은 척박한 환경 속에서도 생업을 이어온 제주의 해녀정신을 상징적으로 표현하고 있다.

구룡포는 1960년대 중반 약 1,580여 명의 제주 해녀들이 이주해 활동한 대표적인 지역으로, 이들은 지역 해녀들과 물질 기술을 공유하며 포항 해양문화 형성에 큰 기여를 했다. 이번에 기증된 해녀상은 이러한 역사적 배경을 기념하고, 오는 2026년 완공 예정인 구룡포 해녀복지비즈니스센터로 이전돼 상시 전시될 예정이다.

이날 함께 진행된 동백나무 기념식수는 제주의 생명력과 자연성을 상징하며, 해풍을 맞고 자라날 동백나무가 두 지역 간 해양문화 교류의 상징으로 자리매김할 것으로 기대된다.

과메기문화관 기획전시실에서는 ‘제주해녀 특별전’도 동시에 개막했다. 이번 전시는 제주 하도리 해녀들의 삶을 주제로, 세계적인 사진작가 김하영 작가와 제주 해녀들이 함께 제작한 사진·영상 작품 30여 점이 전시된다. 전시는 이달 31일까지 무료로 운영되며, 방문객을 위한 해설 프로그램도 마련됐다.

오영훈 제주특별자치도지사는 “해녀는 바다와 가장 가까운 곳에서 살아온 존재”라며 “이 해녀정신이 포항과 제주를 잇는 숨비소리로 울려 퍼지기를 바란다”고 말했다.

이강덕 포항시장은 “해녀를 매개로 한 문화 교류가 두 지역의 문화적 유대를 더욱 굳건히 할 것”이라며 “이번 해녀상과 동백나무 기증이 지역 해양문화 확산의 마중물이 되기를 기대한다”고 밝혔다.

On the 6th, the city held the "Jeju Haenyeo Statue Unveiling Ceremony" and "Camellia Tree Planting Ceremony" at the lawn plaza of the Guryongpo Gwamegi Cultural Center in Pohang. The ceremony unveiled the Jeju Haenyeo Statue, donated to Pohang City by the Governor of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, and planted a camellia tree, a symbol of Jeju, reaffirming the historical and cultural ties between the two regions.

The Jeju Haenyeo Statue embodies the pride and resilience of the haenyeo. The image of the haenyeo, holding a tewak net in her right hand and a kkakkuri (fish trap) in her left, symbolically represents the spirit of Jeju's haenyeo, who have persevered in their craft despite the harsh environment.

Guryongpo is a representative area where approximately 1,580 Jeju Haenyeo (female divers) migrated and worked in the mid-1960s. They shared their diving skills with local Haenyeo, contributing significantly to the development of Pohang's maritime culture. The donated Haenyeo statue commemorates this historical context and will be relocated to the Guryongpo Haenyeo Welfare Business Center, scheduled for completion in 2026, where it will be permanently displayed.

The commemorative camellia tree planting ceremony held that day symbolizes Jeju's vitality and natural beauty. It is expected that the tree, growing in the sea breeze, will become a symbol of maritime cultural exchange between the two regions.

The "Jeju Haenyeo Special Exhibition" also opened in the special exhibition hall of the Gwamegi Cultural Center. The exhibition, themed on the lives of Jeju's Hadori Haenyeo, features approximately 30 photographs and video works created in collaboration with world-renowned photographer Kim Ha-young and Jeju Haenyeo. The exhibition is free and open until the 31st of this month, and guided tours are also available.

Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Governor Oh Young-hoon said, "Haenyeo are beings who have lived closest to the sea," and added, "I hope this haenyeo spirit will resonate through the soumbi sound that connects Pohang and Jeju."

Pohang Mayor Lee Kang-deok stated, "Cultural exchanges mediated by haenyeo will further strengthen the cultural ties between our two regions. I hope this donation of the haenyeo statue and camellia tree will serve as a catalyst for the spread of local maritime culture."
