이번 사업은 중소기업 연구소를 한곳에 모으고, 산학연 협력을 위한 연구타운을 조성하는 것이 핵심이다. 시는 연구타운을 중심으로 도심형 연구 클러스터를 구축해 지역 R&D 거점으로 육성할 방침이다.

포항시 남구 지곡동 일원에 조성될 연구타운은 지하 1층~지상 6층, 연면적 5,300평 규모로 지어진다. 총사업비는 700억 원(국비 250억, 지방비 250억, 민자 200억)이며, 2026년부터 설계 공정에 착수할 예정이다.

특히 이 연구타운은 공공임대형 지식산업센터의 새로운 모델로 주목받는다. 저렴한 임대료로 신규 창업·중소기업을 지원하는 기존 지식산업센터와 비슷하지만, 최첨단 공용 장비 센터와 지역 기업·대학·앵커 기업이 함께하는 산학협력 오픈랩을 갖춰 차별성을 뒀다.

연구타운은 층별로 특화된 공간을 운영한다. 1층은 시민 개방 공간, 2~3층은 기업 입주 공간(70개실), 4층은 공용 장비 센터로 제품 양산 시기를 단축하는 데 기여할 계획이다. 5~6층에는 2차전지, 바이오, 반도체, 수소 등 지역 주력 산업의 기술 사업화를 위한 산학협력 공동연구 오픈랩이 들어선다.

현재 포항시는 포항테크노파크, 지식산업센터 등 15개 창업 지원 기관에 280여 개 기업을 보유하고 있다. 이번 연구타운 건립을 통해 지역 주력 산업의 스케일업(기술력이나 사업 규모를 키우는 것)을 지원하고, 포스텍과 함께 지역 혁신의 선순환 체계를 구축한다는 목표다.

The fifth and sixth floors will house an industry-academia collaborative research open lab for technology commercialization in key regional industries such as secondary batteries, biotechnology, semiconductors, and hydrogen.

Currently, Pohang City has approximately 280 companies operating in 15 startup support organizations, including Pohang Technopark and the Knowledge Industry Center. The goal of this research town is to support the scale-up (increasing technological prowess or business scale) of key local industries and, in partnership with POSTECH, establish a virtuous cycle of regional innovation.
