【브레이크뉴스 포항】박영재 기자=포항시는 28일 포스코국제관에서 유엔산업개발기구(UNIDO), 산업통상자원부, 포항국제전시컨벤션센터(POEX)와 함께 ‘저탄소 철강 글로벌 워크숍(Global Knowledge Exchange on Low-carbon Steel)’을 열었다. 이번 행사는 27일부터 29일까지 3일간 진행된다.

워크숍에는 전 세계 35개국 정부 관계자, 국제기구, 글로벌 철강업계 전문가 등 100여 명이 참석해 탄소 배출 감축과 지속 가능한 산업 전환 전략을 논의한다.

특히 세계철강협회(World Steel), AGORA Industry, Vale, 포스코 등 주요 글로벌 철강기업이 참여해 논의의 무게감을 더했다. UNIDO는 ▲‘기후 클럽 글로벌 매치메이킹 플랫폼’(산업 탈탄소화 투자·기술 협력 플랫폼) ▲‘산업탈탄소화 넷제로 파트너십’(에너지 다소비 산업의 넷제로 전환을 위한 글로벌 이니셔티브) 등을 주도하고 있다.

라나 고네임 UNIDO 산업에너지기후국장은 환영사에서 “철강산업의 넷제로 전환은 전 인류의 공동 과제이며, 특히 신흥국과 개발도상국이 전환 과정에서 소외되지 않도록 국제사회의 지속적인 지원이 필요하다”고 강조했다.

첫날 회의에서는 ▲철강산업 탈탄소화의 필요성과 기술·정책 혁신 동향 ▲지역별 철강산업 현황과 정책 과제 ▲탄소 가격제·그린본드 등 정책 수단의 실행 가능성을 주제로 심층 토론이 이어졌다.

이강덕 포항시장은 “포항은 철강 도시에서 첨단 녹색 혁신 도시로 도약하고 있다”며 “이번 워크숍을 통해 기술 혁신, 정책 협력, 국제 파트너십의 시너지를 극대화하겠다”고 말했다.

행사 마지막 날에는 탈탄소화를 위한 자금 조달과 금융 혁신 방안을 집중 논의한다. 포스코를 비롯한 글로벌 철강기업들은 탄소중립 실현 전략과 성공 사례를 공유하며, 정부·산업계·국제기구가 함께 실행 가능한 협력 방안을 모색할 예정이다.

포항시는 이번 워크숍이 철강산업의 녹색 전환을 이끄는 전환점이자, 국제 협력을 강화하는 계기가 될 것으로 기대하고 있다.

Pohang City Hosts 'Low-Carbon Steel Global Workshop'… Experts from 35 Countries Gather

Pohang City, in collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and the Pohang International Exhibition and Convention Center (POEX), held the 'Global Knowledge Exchange on Low-Carbon Steel' at the POSCO International Pavilion on the 28th. The three-day event will run from the 27th to the 29th.

Approximately 100 participants, including government officials, international organizations, and global steel industry experts from 35 countries, will discuss carbon emissions reduction and sustainable industrial transition strategies.

The participation of major global steel companies, including World Steel, AGORA Industry, Vale, and POSCO, further enriched the discussions. UNIDO is leading initiatives such as the Climate Club Global Matchmaking Platform (an investment and technology cooperation platform for industrial decarbonization) and the Industrial Decarbonization Net Zero Partnership (a global initiative for the net zero transition of energy-intensive industries).

In her welcoming remarks, Rana Ghonaim, Director of UNIDO's Industry, Energy, and Climate Division, emphasized, "The net zero transition of the steel industry is a shared challenge for all of humanity. The international community's continued support is especially crucial to ensure that emerging and developing countries are not left behind in this transition process."

The first day's meeting featured in-depth discussions on the following topics: the need for decarbonization in the steel industry and trends in technological and policy innovation; the status and policy challenges of the steel industry by region; and the feasibility of policy tools such as carbon pricing and green bonds.

Mayor Lee Kang-deok of Pohang City stated, "Pohang is making a leap forward from a steel city to a cutting-edge green innovation city. Through this workshop, we will maximize the synergy of technological innovation, policy cooperation, and international partnerships."

The final day of the event will focus on discussions on financing and financial innovation for decarbonization. Global steel companies, including POSCO, will share their carbon neutrality strategies and success stories, and explore feasible collaborations between governments, industry, and international organizations.

Pohang City anticipates that this workshop will serve as a turning point in driving the steel industry's green transition and strengthen international cooperation.
