가스는 전날인 30일, 상수도 누수로 인한 퇴수 작업 과정에서 설치된 퇴수유공관 유출부에서 발견됐다. 다음날 현장 점검 중 가스 배관 매설 지점에서 미세 누출이 확인되면서 신고가 접수됐다.

이에 따라 1일 경상북도, 포항시, 포항남부경찰서, 포항남부소방서, 한국가스공사, 한국가스안전공사 등 유관기관과 관련 기업이 모여 긴급 상황판단회의를 열고 복구 및 대응 방안을 논의했다. 현재 정확한 누출 부위 조사가 진행 중이며, 가스관을 바이패스관으로 연결해 복구하는 데 약 6일이 소요될 것으로 전망된다.

포항시 관계자는 “유강리 누출 지점 인근 도로를 전면 통제하고 연일읍과 효곡동 주민들에게 안내를 실시해 안전사고 예방과 교통 불편 최소화에 힘쓰고 있다”며 “폭발 위험성은 낮지만 만일에 대비해 가스계측기를 설치해 상황을 수시로 점검하겠다”고 밝혔다.

한편, 관계기관은 2일 2차 대책회의를 열어 복구 진행 상황과 향후 대응 방안을 협의할 예정이다. 경상북도와 포항시, 유관기관은 합동대책반을 운영해 사고가 완전히 수습될 때까지 긴급 대응 체계를 유지한다는 방침이다.
